I agree, but take it a step further. Experiential learning in an undergraduate research lab is where the theory crystallizes into practical application for many students. Without research grants, we can’t take undergrad students, we can’t take grad students, we can’t take PDFs.
this was a good read. One of the things that’s missing is the linkage between being able to educate those people who can understand and use the innovations and funding for research labs in academics environments. A lot of the training that you say we’re missing happens inside those labs
We deserve better trains
How much more evidence do we need? The ultra-rich and the governments supporting them will destroy everything for the sake of profit, power and pride. Nothing is precious to them - not human life, not the living world - except their own wealth and status. Our survival depends on resisting them.
🤮 and deeply disturbing
@canadianforces.bsky.social my tax dollars are paying a nazi pedo? Do better.
it’s super important for studies like they used to show that there are fundamental limits to what we can learn using our current technology platforms. There are a lot of stories generated around false positives.
nice work!
New preprint on the limits of detecting higher-order interactions in microbial communities.
www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
We find that the dominance of additive and pairwise interactions on community function may not reflect biological simplicity, but fundamental limits of statistical detection.
Did we save the daylight?!?!
Because it’s black for bus stop this morning. Sigh.

this is a terrible graphic. if everything was scaled properly we would see how badly the americans sucked, but here they look like they were not that far behind the canucks
Yep, "it's a great tool as long as you already have a good idea of the answer" isn't ideal...
This traitorous Christo-fascist in his own words👇.
#JamilJivani, an MP with NO ROLE in anything, went to the US to undermine 🇨🇦’s duly elected government. Absurdly appointing himself as some high level negotiator, when his purpose was to undermine 🇨🇦’s position for his own political ends. #cdnpoli

Journalists have been asking us again and again about how to spot deepfakes.
Here’s our best advice for now, though it may evolve quickly, as AI advancements are happening in weeks and months rather than years. deepfakestracker.org/deepfake-spo...
I will also say that it’s a bit wild to me that no press freedom organization or professional journalistic association has tried to contact me or even put out a statement here.
I mean Jesus Christ. A little solidarity from institutions would be nice here!
major contribution! i will be sure to use this during performance evaluations from now on!
This is an amazing piece of scientific satire by @russcd.bsky.social. The first sentence alone is a banger:
"The defining goal of the academic endeavor is to establish a single perfect value that completely summarizes entire careers’ achievements."

Carney says he supports US invading Iran, Cuba, and possibly Canada "with some regret"
but AI usage shows you are “cutting edge”
we had a presentation from an AI booster at our institution that told us that using it for science would increase our productivity 1000-fold.
Why can’t people (especially scientists) see that AI generated figures and diagrams shout out that they were AI generated and look awful? You’ve spend many months designing and performing experiments only to cover the resulting masterpiece in clear plastic like a cheap sofa.
1/ PM Carney: you can and must categorically rule out participation in this illegal war.
Your unqualified support of Trump and Netanyahu’s war was bad enough. It’s unconscionable that you’re now considering putting Canadian forces in harm’s way.
Sorry I'm not more open-minded about LLMs, it's just some fucking maniacs shoveled out a bunch of useless bloatware featuring that technology, did not give me any chance to opt out, reorganized the entire economy around it, zeroed out gains made by green energy, and made it impossible to buy RAM
my favourite is when even if you buy it, there is no guarantee that it will pass ESA (electrical) inspection until you unpack it; apparently not a requirement to be listed as a preferred vendor for our institution
