Warm memories to heat up to during this end of Winter! Lovely game Volko. Give me some days and I'll be ready for some Verdun Steel Inferno Action.

Nice, we'll be almost neighbours! I live in the Paris Area. @sdhistcon.bsky.social European version when? π
The Expressway must keep Cross-Bronxing! First 2-decade game. Took around 3h30. Community won with 7 points, Public and Private both with 6. Next time we'll be playing with the objective cards. Great game @nbsp1618.bsky.social @gmtgames.bsky.social
I suspect I'll be at SD Hist once again next year, and if so, would be glad to play it with you Taylor!!
Oh yeah, full game sounds plenty epic to me. Our single decade took 2 hours~ish. Front-loaded an hour-long teach since they didn't have experience with COIN. Game says it's explicitly designed for 2-decade sprints which could come to 3h or so w/ experience I'd say. So full 6-decade game around 5-6h.
Cross-Bronx Expressway with the ladies, from @nbsp1618.bsky.social , @gmtgames.bsky.social . First play, through the 1990s only. Excellent introduction, Community (my fiancΓ©e) won 3-2-2! Exciting stuff, looking forward to a second play with 2 decades to see the ramifications of Blight and Bonds.
Currently playing "A Most Fearful Sacrifice", my first go at a game about the American Civil War. Takes a long time to play, but lighter than expected compared to typical hex-and-counter wargames!
Previous generation of game designers passing the torch to the next one. "Seljuk: Byzantium Besieged" by Justin Fassino (Justegarde on YouTube), newest game on the Levy and Campaign series by @volko.bsky.social and @gmtgames.bsky.social . Looking forward to my copy!
When in San Diego, one can go to historical board game conventions... Or playing footvolley in November! πβοΈ
Ditto. I had a strong selection bias for this first edition π I'm so sorry we were not able to record that for you and others.
Hi @biffybeans.bsky.social, thanks for the interest! We actually explored some solutions but were not able to, sorry for that. Next year I intend to come back with a second, expanded edition of this, I'll definitely try to get equipment in advance. I may however try to write an article about it too!
Famed game designers @danbullock.bsky.social, @volko.bsky.social, and @colewehrle.bsky.social discussing historical game design at our Summit convention in a panel hosted by @arturnottheking.bsky.social.
It was great to hear the inputs of all designers and the discussion was really engrossing. One of the things I appreciate the most about @sdhistcon.bsky.social is the abundance of game designers, of all sorts of experiences! Current plan is to expand this seminar and make it a yearly thing. π
No worries! You can also, using the same account, populate all seats in the room and "play against yourself" or skip turns at least to understand the first turns and advance the game state. Useful since this implementation enforces rules π
Yesterday I was very pleased to organize a game designer seminar here at @sdhistcon.bsky.social , with acclaimed guests @danbullock.bsky.social , @colewehrle.bsky.social and @volko.bsky.social . We spoke for around 2 hours about constraints in game design and players feelings toward randomness.
You can play it over at rally-the-troop.com, excellent implementation!
SD Hist warmup! Glad to see you again @meeplelady.bsky.social π
My honor! See you soon!
I am very proud to say I helped playtesting this game. I absolutely love how intricate the cat-and-mouse game can get, and yet the game always preserves a breezy, playful feeling. And it ended up gorgeous! I absolutely recommend it. Great job @volko.bsky.social and @fortcircle.bsky.social !
Just filled in mine! If you have the time to help with Melissa's research, please do!
Update: GMT's CROSS BRONX EXPRESSWAY game is shipping September 2025 π
The designer (Non-Breaking Space) shared a photo of their game in front of the abandoned building (no longer there) & South Bronx street corner depicted on the box which was visited by Presidents Carter and Reagan 40+ years ago
On my wishlist for the next commute! Thanks!!
Hope y'all have a great event!
Happy to help! I'm fascinated by component-oriented game design, how we can use physical pieces to improve the overall experience. Especially innovations with commonly used pieces. In this case it also looks great!
Follow-up if I may: Arcs or Cyclades?
Kemet or Cry Havoc?
Oh god. Hope you are able to get some well deserved rest and sort this through once you're safely at the final destination. Yes do keep everything and reach out to them, I don't know about legislation in the US but you should be able to get compensation. Sending good energy your way.
If the intended audience is a core family with potentially kids, I don't think that decision is that critical, the world could be more sandboxy (the system would be more flexible as to allow some groups to play more interactively, some less so).
I too struggle with nuance in board game design. It seems like people expect responsiveness from the medium, i.e. I must immediately see the impacts of actions I just took. That said I think your game could definitely work with subtle interaction. You'll have to define how overt it can be though.
Thanks for sharing your process! Always cool to see how other designers work.
