If you weren't able to snag a signed copy of There Is News Along The Ohio River at AWP & want one, hmu! Two readings & a signing last week & sweet messages from folx who’ve read it so far have been super positive. Thanks to those of you who've read, purchased, or said something nice about it or me.

An elegy, D. A. Powell writes in an essay
titled "Structures of the Elegy," is a
"paradise of remembering." Twelve years after my mother passed, as I began work on my book, Fifty Mothers, I kept asking myself, hore could I converse with her through poems? How could I remember her, not just to mourn, but to show her the everything of our world: how we still go to the movies, get on airplanes, share a plate of vada sambar, with her voice urging us on, teasing us, keeping us rooted in the living.

REMEMBRANCE
We must answer each question
with another question.

We must erase our first sorrow.

How shall we hope?
                We must hope.

Do you remember the prayer we said bent over, the giving of body to ground?

We must shape ourselves
first to shadow and then to infinite, the wait of such hunger in every cell.

No matter the hours.
I'll tell you everything. I'll tell you the silence.

Poem by Lauren Camp from her book, 100
Hungers, Tupelo press, 2016

[The dream says it’s more stripper] by ZoΓ« Ryder White "You bring the tea cake, the sweet demeanor."

"See how it compensates?
It gets sloppy. It spills
down its bra. It’s sticky. It howls.
Milkweed. Remember?
You’ll be enmeshed soon."

My first book, Mother Tongue Apologize, contained poems that were tightly tied to the moment of my mother's passing: Those poems felt raw, hot, and urgent to write.
