Stuff about Denmoku now that it's real & public: this is Not the project that was initially conceived, it has been rebooted. Some aspects make it quite obvious, like the fact that it's Minoru Ota's series direction debut, the shift in the setting, and the new subtitle. Fortunately, it looks great!

A series of identical panels is unnatural, so in the context of a manga about cosplay like Bisque, it's enough to convey that you're looking at photos. Anime's framing is more consistent, so this gets entirely reconstructed into an immersive sequence that still emphasizes the snapshots. It rules!

Last time he was listed for genga in a TV episode was in 2014, and only because someone else directed it. You have to look back 22 years to find him credited for animation in an episode of his. Once KyoAni took off, people like him & Ishidate embraced Kigami's approach of self-uncredited animation

Wrote about the intersection of fascinating careers (a crazy producer, an undervalued director, the most textbook rising anime studio) that led to the Takopi anime, and how their attitude aligned with the show's wish for communication among disenfranchised people blog.sakugabooru.com/2025/08/15/t...

You think the CITY anime can no longer surprise you, and then Keiichi Arawi himself shows up to compose the music for one skit. The relationship he's built with Ishidate and the rest of this team is the best thing to ever happen

One of CITY's greatest achievements is pushing veteran artists to tackle new challenges. Joji Unoguchi started as an in-betweener in the 80s, became a leader of KyoAni's budding BG art crew, then spent decades as art & 3DBG director

CITY #05 feels like the type of episode that will awaken the creative spirit of any young person who comes across it at the right time. Immediately lock for topic of discussion among people interested in animation, even decades from now

The 22/7 pilots, early WEP, and even his recent short film colored people's impression of Shin Wakabayashi as a transcendental, ethereal director... then he returns to TV after a million years, notices that Bisque S2 is more comedic, and joins in on the stylistically diverse goofiness just like that

Been struggling for years to write more concise, less spanning-decades-of-production-history articles. Finally realized I can bypass my brainworms by writing laid back, lighter collections of thoughts on Patreon. Most topics I've discussed publicly but this feels like a comfy, still meatier option

Screenshot of a post by me on an Anime News Network forum thread titled "Crunchyroll's German Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show Subtitles List ChatGPT" located at https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=5541634#5541634
The post reads:
[Section talking about English fansubbing omitted due to alt text length limit. See the link above to read this section in full.]
Nevertheless, English fansubbing today is practically a non-existent shadow of what it once was. Most unofficial releases these days are just quick edits of official scripts at best (to add honorifics and untranslate terminology, perhaps, because the weeb quotient truly never dies), with no actual translation checking or original translations in sight. As such, fansubs cannot really be trusted to pick up the slack where official releases fail. Which makes it all the more important for consumers to be loud in their demand for high quality human localization from official outlets. Because if people don't actively demand better and complain about bad (and even just mediocre) products, the soulless executives in charge will keep trying to push AI slop on us in hopes that eventually the people will just give up and accept the slop in silence.
And once that point is reached, it will be effectively impossible to reverse gear. We are already dangerously close to that point as-is, so for the love of all that is JP media, make your voice heard! And as I mentioned earlier, this very much also applies to any outlets covering JP media - if you want JP media to thrive in English in the future too, it is very much in your best interest to make sure your audiences are as educated on the importance of quality localization as possible!
Screenshot of the same AnimeNewsNetwork forum thread post by me (Daiz) a bit later. The last sentence talking about the importance of outlets covering JP media to talk about the importance of quality localization has been removed by ANN moderation/moderator, and replaced with the message "Soapboxing removed. We get it."
Huh, kind of weird of ANN staff to remove the last sentence of my post talking about Crunchyroll using AI #translation on their forums. Did I happen to strike a nerve or something?

If ANN "get it" then surely they would have already done something about it.
If someone has to repeatedly "get up on their soapbox" to tell you to do better then surely...you're just not.
