Wait what they WERE studying us this WHOLE TIME 🧪👀
It would be totally wild if the very first experimental deep-sea mining project came within a half marathon of dredging up the world's largest cold water coral reef. A reef we wouldn't even know existed for 4 more decades.
Anyway, that's exactly what happened.
New on the blog: a dive into inequality in global deep-sea research capacity.

A Bathypterois guentheri tripod fish I made a few years ago for my #SundayFishSketch today. They have modified pelvic and caudal fin rays that enable them to perch, elevated, above the sea floor. Their modified pectoral fins sweep out in front and are used to sense prey. #sciart 🦑
Amazing! Thanks :)

A Wikipedia knowledge panel for the Can-opener smoothdream, a species of anglerfish. The panel includes four images of the fish, which is an inky black blob with a mouth full of sharp teeth and a creepy, spindly horn with a light-up lure on the end.
Wanna see the coolest animal name ever
Is there a recording of this?
I finally got around to updating the Oceanography for Everyone website. It's basic, but it gets the job done: oceanographyforeveryone.com
I'm pathologically incapable of seeing my own typos, so do your worst.

Happy to share this article just published today in Nature npj Ocean Sustainability. 🌊🫱🏼🫲🏾

a squid floating funnel-side down, viewed from the side. it has a long structure that extends beyond the mantle fins that looks like an orange, really ratty bird feather. its body is translucent and dotted with orange chromatophores. its mantle is fairly short in proportion to the rest of the body, and its eyes take up most of its head. beyond the eyes are a thin column of translucent tissue that terminates in the arms, which start translucent and taper to narrower orange tips.
the same squid viewed from the opposite side. the squid is mostly translucent, with orange chromatophores of varying sizes throughout the mantle and other surfaces. its eyes are large, with black pupils outlined with a thin gold band. the arms are predominantly orange and taper to narrow tips. we can see the two clubs extending just beyond the rest of the arms - they are only slightly thicker than the tentacles.
i'm not done yet! it's been a good squid day 🧪. schmidt ocean got some incredible closeup footage of a planctoteuthis during their ascent!
planctoteuthis is a weird one - they're known for having an elaborate secondary "tail" that extends past the main mantle fins.
Reminder: I now have a custom feed running to track skeets about deep-sea mining and the ongoing International Seabed Authority negotiation. Features any skeet with the hashtag #DeepSeaMining as well as a slew of industry related keywords:
🫨 oh no, was expecting to see u next week
Thx 🦑
Yes please!

Happy World Oceans Day 🧪 here have some nudes from my archives
nope that’s a Muusoctopus, from our recent expedition to Dorado Outcrop… cannot recall rn but I think this was a massive male
Nicee! thanks 🧪
Ok Shwitter is officially gone. Now… where the cool science kids at?
