It's easy to be concerned about vaccines when you stop being concerned about viruses. You can only stop being concerned about viruses in a world with vaccines.

Map showing tens of thousands of protests across the US between Trump's inauguration last year and January 31, 2026.
The volume & geographic distribution of protest nationwide during year 1 of Trump's second term was extraordinary.
William Foege and his colleagues’ contributions are credited with saving millions, if not tens of millions of lives.

Agree. Declining US engagement in NATO is probably structural but that would not be a rift. The trade war, the National Security Strategy writings on Europe, and threatening to take Greenland (by force!) were choices. Rift was not inevitable, it was a choice
In an article for the Telegraph, Magnus Öberg and Therese Pettersson, both from @ucdp.bsky.social, discuss how indirect deaths from war far exceed the fatalities recorded in conflict datasets.

🎉 UCDP Research Coordinator Therese Pettersson has been named to Clarivate’s 2025 “Highly Cited Researchers” list. This is likely the first time a researcher from our department has received this distinction.
Congratulations Therese and the entire @ucdp.bsky.social team on this achievement! 💪
Completely agree.
The fates of Ukraine and Europe are linked.
European security system will be destroyed without Ukraine.

Israeli military's own data shows 83% of deaths in Gaza were civilians.
UCDP's Therese Pettersson calls the ratio "unusually high", comparable to Rwanda 1994 and Mariupol 2022.
This article highlights immense civilian suffering and raises questions about the reliability of wartime casualty data.

Armed conflicts involve governments, rebel groups, militias, communal factions, and foreign forces — all interacting in complex ways. The result? A web of violence that can feel overwhelming to understand.
That's why we launch the Conflict Networks Explorer

What drives differences between the conflict events datasets UCDP and ACLED? Contrary to previous claims, @magnusoberg.bsky.social and Mert Can Yilmaz find most differences are due to auxiliary coding rules and standards for source evaluation, not sourcing strategies or inclusion thresholds.
… we show that most of the differences are due to auxiliary coding rules, standards for source evaluation and misrepresentations of UCDP data in the Raleigh et al article (4/4)
… and how strategies for dealing with uncertainty and ambiguity impact the data. Contrary to Raleigh et al claims, the differences between ACLED and UCDP are not primarily due to differences in sourcing or inclusion thresholds. Analyzing the same cases … (3/4)
In the article, we investigate their claims about what drives differences between UCDP and ACLED. In the process we address some general issues arising in event data collection, including the importance of stable definitions, how demands on sourcing varies with the type of data collected, … (2/4)

People who sent that GIF might be thinking of the norm against territorial conquest, now questioned or violated by the three militarily most powerful states in the system. It is, in my view, a more fundamental norm.
