Centre of Recovery Excellence using health information of people who use drugs to undermine their safety The Alberta government's Crown corporation has published its first study using personal health numbers of people accessing supervised consumption sites. While its findings fail to hold up, it offers ...

Here I’m criticizing the Alberta government’s ‘study’ on its own supervised consumption site closures by the merits of its *corruption alone*

Someone more qualified should examine its methodology. Knowing this government, I expect it’s very bad.

If no prior consent was given by any of the patients being studied, this would be a huge scandal not only of the authors but also of the Alberta government and the different departments who shared health information with the authors, because all of them used and shared personal info without consent.

If patients were not aware of the possibility that their PHN could be shared with external researchers and used for research purposes when the PHNs were collected on consumption sites, in theory these information must not be used for doing any research.

At the heart of the issue is whether individuals being studied gave prior consent to the researchers. It seems to me the authors used PHN collected from consumption sites to gather patients' data from different departments. And approvals were only obtained from these departments, not the patients.

🧵The conversation around the University of Alberta "ending" EDI in hiring is purposely confusing in a way that strategically benefits the university and misleads everyone

The question is, should a university grounded in academic freedom censor itself due to government pressure?

Opinion: Little evidence of EDI hiring policy in practice at the U of A The U of A’s recruitment data does not show any signs of progress in EDI, let alone patterns of reverse discrimination.

🧵In this new op-ed in the Edmonton Journal, @pinglamjoeip.bsky.social and I debunk the myth that EDI hiring and “reverse discrimination” happened at University of Alberta.

In actuality, the U of A has not made any advancement in EDI hiring.

🧵The University of Alberta is celebrating the inaugural TIME Magazine rankings, which places it 75th globally and 3rd in Canada.

But @pinglamjoeip.bsky.social and I found that established QS World University Rankings tells a more concerning story about the university’s recent developments.

🧵The House of Commons Standing Committee on Science and Research passed a motion requiring the Tri-Council to release confidential data.

Some members claim research funding is being unfairly allocated to "DEI" or "woke" research

But last year @pinglamjoeip.bsky.social and I debunked this.

🧵The Canadian House of Commons Standing Committee on Science and Research has put forward a motion to release ALL data in relation to federal research funding applications.

This motion was put forward by conservative MPs who are skeptical of funding being allocated "fairly."

Opinion: Alberta's gender-based violence strategy undermined by government policies If the government is serious about ending violence, they will have to start with reversing many of their own economic and social policies

The United Conservative Party claims it has adopted Canada's most comprehensive strategy to reduce gender-based violence. In the Edmonton Journal, Dr. Wendy Aujla, @pinglamjoeip.bsky.social and I outline the absolute hypocrisy of their plan to address violence in Alberta.

The GSA has been collectively bullying an Indigenous associate vice-president (labour) - The Gateway Recent actions by the GSA have been a clear attempt to target and exclude our only Indigenous DEO and labour representative.

@pinglamjoeip.bsky.social ‬ and I wrote a piece in @thegateway.bsky.social to call out the University of Alberta Graduate Students’ Association for targeting and bullying an Indigenous Associate Vice-President Labour.

Drop in drug poisoning deaths does not necessarily indicate Alberta Recovery Model is working Alberta’s controversial approach to the opioid crisis rejects harm reduction, including supervised consumption sites. Despite recent UCP claims that the program is working, more evidence is needed.

The Edmonton region has hit an all-time high in opioid related deaths. Danielle Smith claimed less than a year ago that The Alberta Recovery Model was a success

We wrote about why her statements are misleading in October 2024

U of A cuts funding to university-affiliated daycares, effective January 2026 - The Gateway Beginning in January 2026, the U of A will withdraw funding to six university-affiliated daycares in and around North Campus.

The University of Alberta has slashed funding to their affiliated daycares despite the funding only making up .0154% of its operating budget.

These facilities are vital to the community and lives will be permanently changed by this callous decision.
