Cargo ship captain arrested over collision in North Sea, owner tells BBC A Portuguese registered cargo ship and a US-flagged tanker collided off the East Yorkshire coast on Monday.

🚨The North Sea collision of a tanker carrying jet fuel & a cargo ship highlights the danger of moving fossil fuel products across our oceans. While the extent of the damage remains uncertain, one thing is clear: the time for #FossilFreeOceans is NOW. bit.ly/3Dwejco

Climate impacts are forcing people from their homes. When, how and why do they have valid refugee claims? We don’t need to reinvent the wheel and can dispense with unhelpful terms like ‘climate refugee’. Existing laws, applied correctly, can protect people.

Promoting Human Rights in Climate Action: Report from the Baku Climate Conference COP29 (December 2024) - Center for International Environmental Law CIEL's report summarizes and analyzes key developments at climate talks COP29 related to the integration of human rights in climate policies.

Fresh 2025 reading:
@cielorg.bsky.social's #COP29 report with a focus on #HumanRights & #ClimateChange.

Spoiler alert: it wasn't good. From backtracking on human rights & gender to a weak finance outcome, accelerated carbon markets and L&D largely ignored.

Next week is the 20th anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. Remember - over 230.000 people died that day.

The anniversary is a chance to reflect on what we have learned in terms of preparedness, vulnerability and extreme rapid-onset events. I collected a few bits to reflect on lessons. 🧵

On peut ne pas renouveler un statut de réfugié, mais on ne peut pas expulser des gens qui sont protégés par ce statut.

Quant au fait que ce soit le premier réflexe de ces gouvernements, je ne ferai pas de commentaire.

This week, historic International Court of Justice hearings on the legal obligations of States in the context of #ClimateChange & the consequences of breaching those continue in The Hague.

Week 1 saw climate-vulnerable States make a clear case: such consequences entail #ClimateReparations.

Spotted in draft observer policy for the #LossAndDamage Fund shared LESS THAN 24H before the start of the Board meeting...

Observers have to consult their constituencies.

Well, yeah. But instead of telling us how to do our job, perhaps allow us to do it by sharing docs a little more in advance.

What is happening in #Syria must not overshadow what Syrians want.

The political and military landscape is complex, but the demands for safety and freedom are not. We must not let the bullets drown out the voices of Syrians yet again.

550,000+ people, majority Syrians, have been forced into #Syria.

However, recent returns "should not be used to make preliminary policy determinations about regime behavior and “safe” conditions in regime-held areas—let alone anywhere else in the country."

COP29: no climate justice & no human rights #COP29 in Baku ended last night. A new climate finance goal that will do more harm than good was adopted through an unfair process.

#COP29 is over. A new #ClimateFinance goal that will do more harm than good was adopted through an unfair process. Other decisions add to the regression on #HumanRights obligations and further undermine climate ambition.
