Did My Father’s World Die with Him? Grieving the Incalculable Costs of “STEM.” - The Scholarly Kitchen Grieving my father's death feels inextricably tangled with grieving the catastrophe overtaking the whole of our research infrastructure.

“The problem is that we have accelerated into a consuming and exclusive narrative about science in the national interest.”

Some day I’ll stop sharing my v personal perspective on how devastating humanities has in fact devastated science. Not today.

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

A picture of a donkey from an early modern book. There's a title at the top "Von dem Esel", below that is the donkey itself (depicted as looking at the reader with a rather...self-satisfied expression).
Beneath the donkey picture is the description: "Asinus. Esel."

Some life tips from a 16th century book on animals:

1: Goats are crafty and if you aren't careful, they'll con you.

2: If you're mean to cows & oxen, then they'll inflict their revenge when you least expect it.

3: Be nice to donkeys: They have to put up with us...and they never have a day off.

Lots of respect for @seandlawrence.bsky.social honesty about his confusion and naivete about how the university works and what counts as normal, as a new professor right out of grad school. It's why I run this class the way I do. Ethical collaboration requires understanding complex univ systems.

The @seandlawrence.bsky.social chapter pairs so well with the anonymous chapter on WVU Facts. What does it look like to essentially do advocacy work from the stance of a historian doing oral history, by doing a project through the front door? How does that differ from underground exposé work?

it is actually kind of bananas how unitary executive theorists have taken a straightforward clause requiring the president to "faithfully execute the laws" and transformed it into a grant for the exercise of limitless unenumerated power.

Trump said he’s looking into an Australian-style retirement program for America. Here’s how it works | CNN Business The Trump administration is looking Down Under for inspiration on how to improve the United States’ retirement savings system.

Remember when Cory Booker proposed it and it was 'communism' and it was 'communism' and Thomas Piketty proposed it and it was 'communism' and Jon Stewart proposed it and it was 'communism'

and Trump proposed it and it's an 'Australian-style retirement program'?
