Keep the coal in the hole, people. Climate change is the biggest threat to humankind, and to be burning coal in the 21st century is just silly.

BREAKING: Buller District Council rules out Stevenson's mining being able to dig up the Westport Water Conservation Reserve as part of the Te Kuha #coal mine on the West Coast.
Fantastic news and another nail in the coffin for this really stupid idea. #nzpol

The cold hard maths says it has COST us (the taxpayer) money to GIVE coal to Australian mining companies.

And this government wants to repeat this process again.

What's the bet half of nact1 have cushy director roles lined up in all these filthy murderous industries after they retire?

Two things:
First, cleanup of Stockton Mine has cost the govt $260m (The Press).
Second: at their highest, coal royalties were $3.6m a year.
So at best, Bathurst & Talley's would have to mine Denniston coal for 71 years for the government to break even

Inside an Australian Miner’s Brawl with Alberta Regulators | The Tyee Told to monitor pollution, Montem issued insults and legal threats, documents reveal.

A fascinating account of a belligerent Australian coal company in Alberta threatening to sue the govt for asking it to do the same pollution monitoring as the rest of the industry there.
This is the same kind of behaviour we saw with Bathurst over ECAN's regulation

Yes, they're still up on the coal conveyor: staunch.
And no, we don't need dirty #coal for the clean energy transition

RIP Pope Francis, a #climate hero:
In2015, he said:
“Many of those who possess more resources and economic or political power seem mostly to be concerned with masking the problems or concealing their symptoms, simply making efforts to reduce some of the negative impacts of climate change.”

And let’s not forget those incredibly endangered snails are STILL in a fridge in Reefton: every time they try to re-establish them in a new habitat, it fails. This looks more like extinction than restoration.

New Zealand has a massive tree/climate problem.
You cannot permanently offset fossil fuel emissions by planting trees. The science sees trees as an "impermanent" sink for fossil carbon, which remains in the atmosphere for as much as 10,000 years.

Fossil fuel advocate who slammed clean energy grants joins energy agency board An oil and gas lobbyist was appointed to the board of the country's main energy-saving agency, despite having slammed the agency's clean energy grants as harming the fossil fuel industry.

This is how the far right works. John Carnegie, a fossil fuel lobbyist, was put on the Board of EECA: "Carnegie had criticised one of [EECA's] functions - giving out grants helping companies get off coal and gas - because it was shrinking demand for fossil fuels"
