Ripe Tomato Revolution! Flyer from Durham Grown: The Durham County Library Garden Club. Event on March 21 from 10-11:30 a.m. at Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro Street. You probably aren't a terrible gardener. But why is that the message your tomatoes send you every summer? The answer is a concept called Sister Regions. Just as human sisters can often wear the same pants, Sister Regions can happily grow the same plants. But if your region isn't akin to where a plant, like tomatoes, evolved, then they may struggle to do well. We will dig into the origins of the first tomato plants and their circuitous route to becoming the most valued vegetable (or are they a fruit?). Expect these mysteries to be unraveled with Frank Hyman, author of Ripe Tomato Revolution! Frank will also throw in a few of his revolutionary tomato growing techniques: a tomato house? a straw bale patio? a compost bin on wheels? Expect your tomato growing to be radicalized! Frank Hyman spent his 20’s as a very successful college dropout. Returning to school at 27, he studied under Dr. J. C. Raulston, for whom the arboretum is named and earned a double major in horticulture and design at NCSU.
Expect these mysteries to be unraveled with Frank Hyman, author of Ripe Tomato Revolution! Before and after the presentation there will be a book signing and opportunity to purchase "Ripe Tomato Revolution!" courtesy of Letters Community Bookshop! 2/3

An airborne virus is a virus that can infect other people through unseen particles in the air, sometimes for hours after the sick person has left the area! Masks and clean, ventilated air can reduce the risk of getting sick from airborne viruses or infecting others.
No, Measles is not “just a rash” Sometimes it’s a mild illness that goes away in a week or so. Other times it’s much more. And there’s no way to predict how sick you’ll get. Kind of like how sometimes you’ll walk away from car accidents with only a scratch, but other times you could lose your life, hurt someone else, or end up permanently disabled. Since we don’t know what will happen, we try not to get into car accidents at all. Kind of like how sometimes you’ll walk away from car accidents with only a scratch, but other times you could lose your life, hurt someone else, or end up permanently disabled. Since we don’t know what will happen, we try not to get into car accidents at all. (Yes, everyone you currently know who had measles as a child survived. There’s a reason you never hear anyone who died from measles tell you it wasn’t that bad...)
When it’s not “just a rash,” measles is also: Pneumonia About 1 out of every 20 children with measles will get pneumonia, the most common cause of death from measles in young children. Encephalitis (brain swelling) and disability. Measles can cause brain swelling, which can lead to convulsions and cause permanent deafness and intellectual disability. Pregnancy complications
When it’s not “just a rash,” measles is also: SSPE (subacute sclerosing panencephalitis) A fatal brain disease that appears years after having measles. Symptoms include personality changes, dementia, convulsions, and more, and more, and finally death. Immune amnesia The measles virus can attack the memory cells in the immune system. This immune amnesia can erase up to 73% of your child's immune memory, making it harder to remember germs and fight off infections. Death Before measles vaccines were introduced, 400-500 people in the U.S. died from measeles each year. As vaccination rates decrease, last year the U.S. experienced its largest measeles outbreak in over 30 years and the first measles death in a decade.
So when you hear people say measles is “just a rash” or “not that bad,” maybe that was true when they had measles, and that’s great! But remember that measles can cause severe illness, disability, and death, even if you or your child have no other health conditions. There’s no way to know whether your or your child’s case of measles will be mild, disabling, or deadly, so it’s extremely important to take steps to prevent getting measles at all. (Yes, the measles vaccine, like all vaccines and medications, can have side effects, and it is significantly safer than having measles.) 2 doses of measles vaccine (MMR) = safe and 97% effective at preventing measles.
Unfortunately, no, measles is not "just a rash." Some people will have mild symptoms, but others will experience severe illness, disability, or death. Take steps to avoid severe measles complications by avoiding having measles at all. Learn more about measles: www.healthychildren.org/english/heal...
