Photograph. A large tropical plant in a square garden box next to windows overlooking the parking lot of Golf Mill Shopping Center. It is blue hour outside and cars pass by the nearly-vacant North Mall. The dark brown building to the left - its walls continue beyond the mall's own - was built for MainStreet department store in 1986 when the shopping center was enclosed. The chain was sold to Kohl's in 1989, a Kohl's labelscar is visible on the water-stained ceiling soffit, overhead and left of center.

Photograph. Wide view of the then nearly-vacant "North Mall" of Golf Mill Shopping Center, a relic from when the 1960 open-air mall was enclosed in 1986. There are planters, trees and street lighting down the concourse. A nail salon is the only remaining business on the right. A vacant Sears store entrance is seen at the far left - its closing in 2018 severed access to this concourse from the rest of the shopping center.

According to boots on the ground: the 1986-vintage "North Mall" at Golf Mill Shopping Center is now closed with the doors permanently locked.

With the property on the market, and already approved for a $440m mixed-use redevelopment, tenants in the rest of the mall will continue their slow exodus.

After a long 20-month slumber... Belvidere Cinema came back with a bang Saturday with one of the crazy busiest events we've ever done. Around 180 in attendance for E.T. between two shows - first, nearly a full house - with guests visiting from Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan.

Belvidere Mall opened 60 years ago today as the first enclosed shopping center in Lake County, Illinois. One of the very few malls to survive a near-death experience: today it remains a vibrant community hub with 38 shops, services and restaurants - nearly all locally-owned - still calling it home.

#OnThisDay Oct 8, 1956: Southdale, the first fully enclosed shopping mall in the world, opens in Edina, Minnesota. Architect Victor Gruen, later realizing his invention had not lived up to his utopian vision of a car-free public square, became the biggest critic of malls until his death in 1980.

One of the longest abandoned mall stories in recent history finally concluded today as the last wall of Northridge Mall was demolished this morning, in Milwaukee.

Northridge operated from 1973-2002. The property then sat in redevelopment hell for 23 years until the city seized it in foreclosure.

A recent visitor to Waterloo says Crossroads Mall is no longer accessible to the public beyond the entrance which houses Geno's Pizza -- the mall's last tenant. Demolition of the mall is slated to begin after Geno's closes in December
