Mainly Ukrainians and Germans remember the start of the “special military operation” against Ukraine, which Russia began on Vladimir Putin's orders exactly four years ago today, on 24 February 2022, with a solidarity #demonstration in Berlin-Mitte.

Twice a year, in April and September, the sun sets longitudinally on Frankfurter Allee and Karl-Marx-Allee in Berlin. The sun then appears as a yellow, glowing circle next to the sphere of the Fernsehturm.

It is spring and the rice field is ready to be ploughed. One strip has already been ploughed. After ploughing the field, the soil is levelled and the large clumps of earth are broken up. The rice field can then be flooded with water and sown.

This photograph is from a photo series on rice cultivation in València's Albufera. This photo project falls under the broader theme of cultural landscapes. By using photos and text, I show what people do with the landscape they live in and its effects on the landscape. The documentaries are meant to be registrations, telling and showing what happens and how something functions.

Human activities in the Albufera are at odds with nature in the area. Many animal and plant species are disappearing due to agriculture, fishing, hunting, industry, tourism and urbanisation. Since the people have realised that a clean living environment and high biodiversity also have great benefits for humans, they are committed to protecting the flora and fauna in the Albufera. As the interests of different parties are often conflicting, this is a difficult and long-term process. Nevertheless, people are increasingly managing to make their activities less harmful to the natural habitat.

Shortly before sunset, the warm coloured light of the winter sun shines on the partially flooded rice field. In winter, the soil recovers from the previous harvest by absorbing nitrogen and other nutrients from the plant residues of the previous harvest, so that the soil can provide enough nutrients for the rice plants of the next harvest.

The chaff from the rice plants, which remains in the rice field after harvesting, is burned. The burned plant remains provide the soil with new nutrients.

When the floodgates of a rice field are open and water flows from the canals into a rice field, #fish can swim into the rice field. Fish do this to find new places where there is food. They can reach other channels by #swimming out of the rice field through another lock.

Parc Natural de l'Albufera de València, Spain 2022. - image: Michel Meijer

Panorama AW-200 Nr. 085 - image: Michel Meijer

A Lomography project using the Panorama AW-200, a compact camera mainly made of plastic.

The camera I used for this project, the Panorama AW-200, was given to me by a friend. She asked if I could take nice pictures with it. I took up the challenge. The Panorama AW-200 is an analogue compact camera with the 35mm format and made of mainly plastic and few setting options. The camera was originally designed for people who know little to nothing about photographic technology and want to photograph family and friends in front of an environment they are in at the time the picture is taken. Therefore, the camera is also ideally suited for Lomography. Lomography was invented by a group of students in Austria in the early 1990s. They discovered the, easy-to-use camera, Lomo LC-A. This is a camera manufactured in St. Petersburg made mainly of plastic. Lomography is a photographic technique that involves very spontaneous shooting and can be described as experimental snapshot photography. Lomographers' motto is: 'Don't think, just shoot!' Common aesthetic and technical rules are ignored.

A man in traditional Bolivian costume during the parade of Karneval der Kulturen in Berlin, Germany 2025. - image: Michel Meijer

Every year on Pentecost weekend, “Karneval der Kulturen” takes place in Berlin Kreuzberg. People, mainly from non-Western European countries but living in Berlin, express their original culture. Various stages host dance, music and theatre performances. There is also a market where traditional food and objects are sold. All participants are amateurs and work on a voluntary basis. The highlight is the parade that passes through Kreuzberg on Sunday afternoon. Until this year, the parade always passed through Kreuzberg. But this time the parade was held in Friedrichshain and Mitte for the first time.

Audiences, organisers, local residents and participants were very #positive about the new location through the Frankfurter Allee and the Karl-Marx-Allee for the #parade of Karneval der Kulturen.

The #atmosphere was good during this year's Karneval der Kulturen #parade. There was also enough space for all the spectators as the street is very wide.
