Microplastics in ballast water and limiting movement in the global aquatic environment: A case study Approximately 98Β % of microplastics (MP) entering the marine environment originate from human activities on land, such as untreated wastewater dischar…

🚒 New study highlights the importance of #microplastic release via ship ballast water and found a mean of 26 particles per litre (5 ships, ATR-FTIR). Assuming an mean ballast water volume per ship of ~36,000 m3, the total release could be 936 million particles.

PFAS chemicals tied to weight loss difficulties in teens - UPI.com "Forever" PFAS chemicals might hamper a teenager's ability to drop excess weight, even if they've undergone weight-loss surgery, researchers said in a study.

"PFAS are a modifiable risk, which is why protective policies are so important to reduce exposure and safeguard public health -- especially for vulnerable populations."

For western Hudson Bay, break-up is advancing rapidly. Some polar bears have crossed over to landfast ice. This is an early breakup. Consequences for the bears are unknown until fieldwork in August starts. In contrast to 2024, it's not looking good for the bears.

The ocean forecast is in… and it’s alarming.

Climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution are pushing our ocean to the brink. Protecting it means protecting all life on Earth.

COβ‚‚ at Mauna Loa just reached a monthly average of >430 ppm for the first time.

That's possibly higher than in over 3.3 million years.

The global RATE of increase is off the chart.

It's hard to exaggerate how unprecedented this is!

So far we are using glass pebbles to act as substrate within the tank which gives Zebrafish foraging opportunities. We also have stickers on bottoms of tanks that are different colores and gravel types.

There is a difference between 1) having emotions about the state of the world and 2) trying to convince people that it’s too late to act on climate (a false premise that assumes climate change is pass/fail when it’s a matter of degrees).

Impeding climate action is complying in advance.

Canada's managed forests emitted about as much CO2 in 2023 as Russia's national economy did from fossil fuel combustion that same year.

Chewing gum releases microplastics into your mouth, scientists warn Both natural and synthetic gums were found to release similar quantities of microplastic particles.

New study from UCLA finds that chewing gum releases hundreds to thousands of microplastics into your saliva, regardless of whether it's synthetic or natural. Over a year, this could mean ingesting around 30,000 microplastics. #microplastics #plasticpollution

A bonus of this study is one of the locations (NW Illinois) was actually a field site of my master's thesis research.

I wasn't involved in the linked paper, provided below. (Scroll to bottom of website)
