Thanks Anna! Wishing you an amazing new year π€
Started my masters today! Iβm equally nervous and excited π
Congrats Julia π
π’ New study highlights the importance of #microplastic release via ship ballast water and found a mean of 26 particles per litre (5 ships, ATR-FTIR). Assuming an mean ballast water volume per ship of ~36,000Β m3, the total release could be 936 million particles.

For western Hudson Bay, break-up is advancing rapidly. Some polar bears have crossed over to landfast ice. This is an early breakup. Consequences for the bears are unknown until fieldwork in August starts. In contrast to 2024, it's not looking good for the bears.
The ocean forecast is inβ¦ and itβs alarming.
Climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution are pushing our ocean to the brink. Protecting it means protecting all life on Earth.

COβ at Mauna Loa just reached a monthly average of >430 ppm for the first time.
That's possibly higher than in over 3.3 million years.
The global RATE of increase is off the chart.
It's hard to exaggerate how unprecedented this is!
Our animal facility at @ualberta.bsky.social is officially a Green Lab! Now, #sustainability has become a large part of our daily work, without compromising science or animal welfare. I had the wonderful privilege of presenting our initiatives and impact to our team last week ππ¬π
Talking to other scientists on here. Do you wake up everyday more frustrated? Or is that just me?

Four polar stereographic maps showing Arctic near-surface air temperature anomalies for the month of April in 1985-1994, 1995-2004, 2005-2014, and 2015-2024. Most all areas are observing long-term warming, which is largest over ocean areas.

New study detects #microplastics in 35% of π cod muscle samples, i.e.βfiletsβfrom western Norwegian waters with a mean particle count of 1.55 Β± 2.75 nMP/100 g, mostly polypropylene (33%) & polyethylene (30%) and mostly (86%) fragments sized 32-100 Β΅m (u-FTIR).

So far we are using glass pebbles to act as substrate within the tank which gives Zebrafish foraging opportunities. We also have stickers on bottoms of tanks that are different colores and gravel types.
There is a difference between 1) having emotions about the state of the world and 2) trying to convince people that itβs too late to act on climate (a false premise that assumes climate change is pass/fail when itβs a matter of degrees).
Impeding climate action is complying in advance.
Canada's managed forests emitted about as much CO2 in 2023 as Russia's national economy did from fossil fuel combustion that same year.

Whenever I make a mistake at work now, I just blame it on the spoonful of plastic in my brain.
New study from UCLA finds that chewing gum releases hundreds to thousands of microplastics into your saliva, regardless of whether it's synthetic or natural. Over a year, this could mean ingesting around 30,000 microplastics. #microplastics #plasticpollution
One excellent study comes from Illinois.
A bonus of this study is one of the locations (NW Illinois) was actually a field site of my master's thesis research.
I wasn't involved in the linked paper, provided below. (Scroll to bottom of website)
