For example, a more detailed description of the policies and their pros and cons can enhance public expectations and thus create broader acceptance. Paying less attention to populist actors would also help by limiting of the negative consequences of their effective communication.
No, we wouldn't be that pessimistic. Indeed, the study indicates the risk of progressive policies being exploited by right-wing populist parties. But as we point out in the conclusion, there are many ways to counter this risk.

3οΈβ£ Surprisingly, these effects are widespread across society β not just among economically or socially vulnerable groups.
1οΈβ£ Progressive policy changes on immigration, climate, and gender equality significantly reduce policy support.
2οΈβ£ This decline is particularly strong when right-wing populists are electorally successful, exploiting these policies for reactionary, anti-elitist rhetoric.

π Our insights highlight the pivotal role of social norms and political institutions in shaping immigrant voter turnout. Surprisingly, migration-related factors like immigrant unemployment rates don't significantly influence turnout rates.
5/6
π Our key finding: Active participation of national parties and a thriving political culture (proxied by higher voter turnout in municipal elections) foster greater civic engagement among immigrants.
4/6
In recent elections, the turnout averaged only 13%, ranging from 5.4% to 26.5% across municipalities. We're exploring factors contributing to this regional variance to better understand how to potentially boost engagement.
3/6
Integration councils play a crucial role in addressing migration in local politics, with NRW leading the way with 107 integration councils. Despite being pioneers, these councils are often unknown.
2/6
π³οΈNon-EU citizens in Germany can't vote in parliamentary elections, creating a representation gap. In cities like Essen, where 17.3% are excluded, integration council elections aim to address this. Low voter turnout and limited political power persist as challenges.

A while ago, we (conradziller.bsky.social, Nicole Marx) published an article on voter turnout in integration council elections in Germany. We've now uploaded an English translation of this important topic bit.ly/integration_....
