For someone who claims to be a castle botherer, I realise I haven't actually posted a picture of one. This is Longtown Castle, just about in England - the Welsh border is very close by. The mid C12 keep seen through the gatehouse of the inner bailey with its portcullis slot on the left.

Good morning from the Welsh borders. What are your favourite trees? Our weeping ash has die back, and it may be time to replace. I’m attempting to counteract my sadness by planning to plant something incredibly cool as a replacement. Ginkgo?

Happy to see #fridayreads starting to flourish here! I'm currently enjoying The Red Scholar's Wake by Aliette de Bodard: pirate space opera politics and intrigue, with sentient ships in the mix.

I need more coffee, but I initially read this as β€˜ostriches’ and for one second thought, wow, I had no idea they could swim and isn’t it interesting how their legs camouflage completely. I’m going to make another coffee now, a big one

For lovers of snow ❄️ I give you the greatest snow ball fight in history. In 1854 300 people including stock brokers went into snowy battle at Liverpool’s Exhange. The Liverpool Mercury reported β€œHats flew away, By the force of the ball, From heads that were grey, Or with no hair at all”.

A snow-dusted curved driveway leading up to the front entrance of Belsay Hall, a large Georgian house inspired by Greek and Roman architecture

It’s nearly a year since we arrived at Belsay Hall on another snowy morning. Ingrid Pollard’s installation explored deep time, bringing in the outside world of slate, wood and ancient stone, with a fantastic team of expert staff and volunteers. 74 years ago today, Tom Rout was ploughing when he turned up one of most iconic British archaeological finds - the Great torc.

The finds went through treasure process & Tom was awarded Β£1850. Compared to his Β£5 weekly salary, this was a huge amount of money.

I plan to post at least one of my photos a day here on Bluesky. I design each of my photos using recent research into the benefits to mental health of looking at plants & patterns in nature.
Making my collections relaxes my noisy autistic+ADHD brain & they'll relax yours by looking at them here:

I will caveat this by saying that personal approaches came from authors I’d chatted to enough on Old Twitter for us both to be confident it was a good idea, and I was delighted to quote for them. But a book’s success should not lean for one second on the author’s personal contacts.

16.11.2024 09:56 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Honestly, it perpetuates inequality. Publishers should have a strong idea of comp titles and by all means request author input, but make the approaches themselves in such a way that the author being asked can easily say no. It can put both parties in such an awkward position

16.11.2024 09:47 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

A mix. This may be controversial but I wish authors asking other authors for quotes wasn’t a thing. It’s inequitable and awkward: not everyone has contacts and whilst I’m very grateful to all the kind folk who quoted for me, I felt as if I were putting them on the spot if I was doing the asking
