🗳️ What helped close the turnout gender gap after female enfranchisement?
▶️ We study a 1933 lottery that assigned newly enfranchised women as poll officers and its impact on their voting in 1936.

6/ 🌍 Implication: Involving underrepresented citizens in electoral processes, like mandatory poll officer service, boosts democratic participation and helps close voter turnout gaps.
5/ 🔍 The effect was stronger where women received more political inputs via parties/organizations. It also spread in communities where women lived close to each other, as poll officers could share their experiences, amplifying participation.
4/ 🔍 Key finding: Women who served as poll officers were more likely to vote in subsequent elections than those who didn’t. Experiencing democracy firsthand enhances civic engagement by showing how the system works.
3/ 🏛 Context: We use a historical natural experiment where women were randomly selected as poll officers in the first elections they could vote. Using data from Girona, we track those drafted, identify who served, and measure their turnout in two later elections.
2/ 🎯 Turnout gender gap after female enfranchisement is widespread. Most studies focus on contextual/institutional factors. We examine whether compulsory poll officer service affects individuals' likelihood to vote in future elections.
