This article is so great John. Thanks for writing it. For me, it wasn't Croydon but Minneapolis. As a young music journo in '96 I interviewed Neil Tennant & he reflected what you're saying; their 'Please' songs were about longing and escape, esp. escape to the city. Decades later I helped form (1)
