An electric tea candle looks almost like a real flame if you don’t pay too much attention, but when I went to a restaurant that had put up a wall of electric tea candles they flickered together in robotic unison. Extruded text always reminds me of that wall.
This is what ecocide looks like.

Might Could and me at AWP. I haven't been in ages and am really looking forward. Come say hi! 💚
What if we just…you know…didn’t use AI, given that we’ve seen approximately 1 billion red flags?
How I wept tonight.
“We can endure this, & be a guiding light through it, but only by recentering, by teaching citizens, not workers; power, not PowerPoint; aspiration, not apocalypse. Despair is how we lose. The classroom is where we battle it. All other battles flow from here.”
This is how turtles flirt. Let me flutter my hands in your face!

A copy of Might Could, a diminutive poetry book, lying on snowy grass. The cover reads Might Could / Anna Lena Phillips Bell / Winner of the Twentieth Anthony Hecht Poetry Prize, and features a work in glass by artist Amber Cowan: a footed compote with a clear cloche over it, filled with vegetative forms and a vintage glass fox.
Might Could is available for preorder! Thanks to @pomegranate_books you can order a signed copy—at pombookslocal.com or the link is in my bio. Or for an unsigned copy, visit @asterism_books. THANK YOU to everyone who’s ordered the book already, or asked your library to. 💚 Also, m e l t i c e.
Thank you!
Legislation is working its way through the 2026 Va. General Assembly session right now that would end similar *local* 287(g) agreements & other ICE entanglements here.
Virginians, make sure you tell your state reps you have their back in support of these bills! See acluva.org for more details.
BREAKING:
The White House lashed out at the creators of this ad for "fear-mongering".
It must have really struck a nerve. Maybe they don't like being outed as fascists.
You know what to do: SPREAD THIS EVERYWHERE!

2026 is going to be a great year to run for office. Filing deadlines are coming up fast -- in most places, it's not too late to get on the ballot. We'll help you get started. runforwhat.net
I understand it's hard for some to use the term concentration camp, even for those horrified by what's happening. And there are settings (e.g., court) where it may not be helpful today. The key thing to realize is that there's an arc of how detention regimes tend to go, and we're recognizably on it.

Recently, when I encounter something I don't know, I'm trying not to pull out my phone and look it up. Feeling certain all the time has terrible consequences for art.

One small thing you can do today: ICE is ramping up in Maine. Food For All is delivering meals to 300 families that can't leave their homes. They need $7k a day to continue operations. The Culture Study community is raising enough to cover a day—join us?

While independent bookstores are giving out free whistles, hosting protest sign making events, and donating proceeds to mutual aid, Amazon is *checks notes* providing technology that assists ICE in their terrorizing of communities.
Independent bookstores deserve your support. Amazon does not.

moderntimescafempls Hello, My name is Dylan. I own Modern Times Cafe in South Minneapolis and have for 15 years. Modern Times is on the corner of 32nd and Chicago Ave; 6 blocks from where George Floyd was murdered, 3 blocks from where Renee Good was executed, and a mere neighborhood away from where Alex Pretti was murdered. After ICE Agents shot and killed Renee and then Alex, I was at the scene within hours. I witnessed hostile and aggressive armed goons sent by the Federal Government protecting each other from unarmed, outraged citizens. I bore witness to these atrocities and was tear-gassed, smoke bombed, and concussion grenaded alongside my neighbors. Minneapolis has been living through the abhorrent horror of the federally sanctioned abduction of our neighbors, public executions of people exercising their rights, and a targeted escalation of government violence. It's an atrocious and despicable occupation. We are entering yet another week of this occupation with a deep sense of dread and mourning. We absolutely cannot go on as we have. am sick of generating money for the soldiers in our streets and for a government that won't protect us - a government who is actively inflicting daily harm on its citizens.
Effective tomorrow we are done making money for the fascists that occupy our city. We refuse to generate taxes under the guise of a functioning for-profit capitalist business aligned with government strategy. Amidst many strategic pivots and determined leadership, Modern Times has been barely soluble since 2020. Therefore, for the remainder of the government occupation, we will function as a free and donation based restaurant, Post Modern Times. Everyone is welcome EXCEPT ICE. Hours will not change but our menu will be smaller. Staff agreed to be present on a volunteer basis, working from shared tips and community donations. Post Modern Times is a small stance amidst a gigantic fight that may shape the future of this country. I am inspired by the ways our community has grown together, our hearts breaking open, to give and receive care in all the ways we can. May we continue to see each other in the streets.

Modern Times is a South Minneapolis staple, and a personal favorite haunt. For the duration of the occupation they're renaming themselves Post Modern Times and going to a donation-only model. Everyone but ICE can eat for free.
