i haven't played much later gen but like GSC has this interesting tradition-versus-modernity thing going on and when the story beats play off this theme, it's great! and then also you got this vestigial game structure of rival+gyms+elite four which feels disconnected from all that, a bit purposeless

hmm, but i do wanna think deeper than hand-waving it away as first-time hype—i'm getting at something concrete. it's like..... when do i feel the power and purpose of a storyteller. RBY's rival champion feels like storytelling. GSC's lance-as-champion feels like it's just copying RBY's homework
