Former Rep. Mary Peltola announced a bid for Senate in Alaska, a major boost to Democrats’ long-shot hopes of winning back the chamber this year.

I made this portrait—Mary Peltola — First Alaska Native and Woman to Represent Alaska in US Congress—in 2023. It's made of non-recyclable trash on board.

A vertical mixed-media assemblage made from medical debris, masks, gauze, plastic packaging, tubing, and cut-out ransom-style lettering. At the center is a dark medical film with a face-like construction: a cloth sleep mask for eyes, a small blue-and-white plastic item between them like a nose, and a set of dental molds forming teeth. Oxygen tubing drapes outward like arms. Below is a stack of disposable blue and white face masks. Along the left and right borders are colorful, irregular ransom-style letters forming fragmented phrases related to abortion, rape, incest, and reproductive autonomy. The bottom of the piece includes gauze strips, medical waste, crumpled mask materials, and a replacement mask filter package. The overall appearance is unsettling and medical, evoking themes of control, trauma, and restricted reproductive rights.

Letters read: Alabama is one of the first state to ban abortion in the immediate aftermath of SCOTUS overturning Roe v. Wade.
No provision for rape or incest. Performing an abortion could carry a life prison sentence.

Assemblage artwork titled “The State of Healthcare in the United States of America #4 ” by Sarah Schneiderman. The piece resembles an American flag constructed from non-recyclable medical materials. Pill blister packs, bandage wrappers, eyeglass clothes, and protective gloves make up the blue field. Prescription bottles, gauze, pill packets, syringe flanges, body lotion tube, face mask filters, and red and white plastic packaging form the red and white stripes. The flag’s surface is uneven and stitched together on black gazebo netting.

I’m getting coverage. Simsbury’s Art Censorship is making waves. This week, the Brattleboro Commons published an op-ed about self-censorship, and a podcast about plastic pollution mentioned that the Simsbury Library censored my work. Visit my website’s home page for links to both outlets.

An assemblage artwork resembling a butterflyfish, crafted from non-recyclable materials like black plastic utensils, buttons, beads, syringe plungers, and fabric. It features black bars on the fish's body and tail, with pink lips made from a hair tie. The piece symbolizes the environmental impact of plastic waste and censorship in climate discourse.

Simsbury Library censored me for mentioning "climate change" and "ocean warming." I moved my fish show to Old St. Andrew’s Church—free speech champions.

The librarians were very supportive but were pressured by some people higher up in town government.

I’m scheduled to show in two other local libraries next year. I was clear with them that I would use the terms climate change and ocean warming in my text. They are fine with this language.

Not only that but when i suggested that i put up two posters — one of the first amendment to the US constitution and one of the fourteenth amendment, i was told that I couldn’t do that either.

"ocean warming" is deemed to create an "unwelcoming environment" for potential users of the room in which the art and accompanying text is displayed.

Thank you for your support.

Original poem wanted for this artwork: Black Margate.

I created this artwork from raffia, netting, clothing labels, food packaging, and more, adhered to a board with nails and staples.

I'm placing artworks in little free libraries along with poems, inviting anyone who wants to write something.

Assemblage portrait of Jenifer Rajkumar created from non-recyclable trash, including food packaging, labels, wires, and plastic fragments. Her face is formed from layered packaging textures, with red lips and bright white teeth. Black and white wire, and fabric outline her hair, and fragments of printed text and barcodes are visible across the surface. The piece is vibrant and textured, emphasizing both her likeness and the environmental message of the medium.

Assemblage artwork of a rosy razorfish swimming above a seafloor made of layered non-recyclable trash. The fish is constructed from tea bag wrappers, food packaging, and other discarded materials, with reds, oranges, greens, and yellows forming its body. The background features shades of blue at the top suggesting ocean water, while the lower section, which is mostly beige and green, is filled with overlapping scraps of labels, instructions, and wrappers representing polluted seabed debris.

My show planned for Oct. at the Simsbury Library is being censored. Can't say "climate change" or "ocean warming." This compromises my message in pieces like "Bicolor Damselfish in a Green Garbage Sea" & "Snap Out of Your Plastic Habit Black Snapper." I refuse to compromise my art. Show CANCELED!

Portrait of a white man with dark gray hair, black glasses, and a big white mustache. The man’s face is bright pink. Between the color of his face and the fact that his mouth is open as if screaming, the man looks angry. The background is bright red. The man is wearing a black jacket, white shirt, and red and black tie. All the surfaces contain a lot of texture. The mustache is made from plastic knives, the skin from fake flower petals, and electrolyte beverage packets, and the clothing from strips of plastic.

A circular mixed-media collage depicting a cross-section of a liver cell. The outer edge features layered yellow, brown, and green plastic packaging and fabric pieces representing tissue. At the same time, the inner area features textured green shapes crafted from additional plastic packaging, fake flower stems and leaves, a metallic postcard, and beads for cellular structures. Two large, overlapping blue shapes at the center resemble nuclei, surrounded by scattered red and green beads and buttons that symbolize various organelles. The collage utilizes recycled materials, including yarn, plastic, fabric, and broken jewelry, to add texture and vibrancy, highlighting the theme of plastic accumulation in the liver.
