For me, the most sensible explanation is Russian psyop, aimed at driving the wedge between Poles and Ukrainians. The damage is minimal, to ensure a muted reaction. But there's already finger pointing at Ukraine for presumably wanting to draw Poland into the war with a false flag operation.

As far as the meaning of the color red, it does represent blood and toil (not soil) of the working class, and the fight for social justice. It had that meaning since the French Revolution, and the Bolsheviks picked it for that reason.
It's actually interesting, etymologically. The squares in major russian cities were called "beautiful squares" but the word that used to mean both beautiful and red, in time changed the meaning to only red, while beautiful got altered: "krasnyy" v. "krasivyy".
