The years passed by Elias faster than he could fathom, yet slower still. Oftentimes, he took to watching the seasons change from the entrance to his new hovel. After he built it, the grief he felt paralysed him. He took to festering in his own filth most days, not bothering to wash or cook or clean. Sage would try to nudge him up to his feet, to gather some will to move forward, but he had no patience. Sometimes, when he was too annoyed with her persistence, he would send her away for hours, sometimes days at a time. Eventually, Sage took to occupying herself and waiting for Elias to snap out of this on his own. But he could not snap out of it. He would not even bother to try. The seasons changed, and still he fasted, barely eating or drinking. He could not sleep, having grown so used to the sounds of Bren’s snores. The silence was driving him *mad.*
