FEMA will stop knocking on doors to provide aid to disaster survivors, per a memo obtained by WIRED this week. It comes as the agency is shifting responsibility for recovery efforts to local authorities.
Oh, and it's hurricane preparedness week, btw.

WIRED article screenshot: Is generative Al introducing new stereotypes to different languages and cultures? That is part of what we're finding. The idea of blondes being stupid is not something that's found all over the world, but is found in a lot of the languages that we looked at. When you have all of the data in one shared latent space, then semantic concepts can get transferred across languages. You're risking propagating harmful stereotypes that other people hadn't even thought of.
Itβs not just biasedβgenerative AI is importing old stereotypes into new languages and cultures.

US campaign entices Canada tourists: βCome visit America and also maybe El Salvador!β
They had lawyers, trials, most were given pretrial release, allowed to testify in their own defense, got discovery, could call witnesses, could cross-examine witnesses, could present mitigation at sentencing, and had a right to appeal.
Credit to Sen. Van Hollen. As do all decent people, I hope it is a step toward winning back this man's freedom.

Wilmer only found out his son had been detained after receiving a phone call on March 15 from his nephew, Luis, who lives with them. That morning was their last time together; they had gone around the corner to do their laundry. Later that day, Wilmer said that his son met with a friend to get help with some errands at the American Red Cross. He learned this from Luis, who looked at the situation from inside the apartment: when his son was on his way back, just steps from his home when ICE agents stopped him. βThe officers grabbed him and two other boys right at the entrance to our building. One said, βNo, heβs not the one,β like they were looking for someone else. But the other said, βTake him anyway.'β That moment marked the beginning of Wilmerβs search for answers β answers heβs still waiting for.
One of hundreds of people abducted by ICE and sold to slavery in El Salvador was a 19 year old with no criminal record in the US or Venezuela and no tattoos of any kind.
An ICE kidnapper who grabbed him outside his house said, "He's not the one."
The other said, "Take him anyway."
So they did.
Bring back *everyone* who was sent from the U.S. to CECOT in El Salvador. *No one* should be sent there. ALL their rights were violated. ALL of them should come home.

These men behind bars are not in prison after being charged with crimes. They are "enemy combatants" being detained in a concentration camp.
As such, Kristi Noem's crass photo-op using them as props violates the Geneva Convention's prohibition of βexposure to public curiosityβ of those captured.
This guy is in one of the worst prisons in the world with no way out and may spend the rest of his life there because, it appears, he has an autism awareness tattoo in honor of his little brother.

No matter your station in life, there is astoundingly little separating you from those men in that cage behind Kristi Noem. No charges, no attorneys, no hearings, no trial. Just conjecture and brute force could be enough to justify completely dehumanizing you, too.
