Outside of my weekly brain pounding raid night Iβm great! And even thatβs not so bad. Itβll be alright.
still alive and playing FFXIV sometimes against my will but its okay.
THAT'S ME!!!! HEY THAT'S ME????
i love this post. RPers blame this problem on their self-confidence way too often.
it's not your fault: plucking a compelling idea from the universe of anything is hard!
RP follows a lot of the same rules as improvisational theater. and improvisers built tools to solve this problem.
Doesn't that sound like a more fun way to write a starter? It doesn't have to be intimidating or scary. It's chance to discover new things about BOTH of your characters! Don't be afraid of it - leap on it! Your characters will surprise even you, so long as you let them.
A good RP interaction (starter or otherwise) is similar to a good improvised scene:
Both players swap "gifts", like painting inside of lines you've just drawn, in shapes and colors neither of you would have ever found alone. You won't know what the conclusion will be, but you'll find it together.
By endowing my RP partner with this idea, I'm inviting them to fill in the blanks:
What is it? Where did you get it? What does it mean to you? What does it mean to ME? What am I to you?
Starters are hard because introductions are awkward and kind of boring. Offer something fascinating instead.
"Hey, we're meeting for the first time. Take this new toy neither of us have ever played with until just now. Let's play with this new toy for a little while together."
Doesn't that sound like fun? Isn't it more fun than saying " Hello stranger, I'm Ringo, I have a magic sword" ad nauseum?
I'm not defining what the trinket is. I'm not defining how my RP partner came to possess it. I'm not saying they got it through violence or murder or theft or maybe just lost & found. I'm not even sure they know what it is.
I don't know any of those answers. That's for my partner to decide.
Endowment also doesn't mean you gift your partner a COMPLETE and FULLY FORMED idea.
This is why A to B to C is important: it tells you where to STOP.
In my A>B>C example, my partner has the trinket I recognize in their hands. That's the starter. Full stop, hit send.
"ur broke ass still on louisiana purchase at wallyworld" oh my god
This takes practice, and can feel overly prescriptive. "I'm making a decision about your character for you" is a BOLD move. I could talk about agency for hours on this point.
That's why your endowment should be SAFE (non-harmful) and UNOBTRUSIVE (only ADDS, does not TAKE AWAY from them).
In my A to B to C example, on C I'm **endowing** my partner with an idea. A trinket, with a history attached to it, that connects my character to theirs.
This is the co-writing version of a four course meal served to your (probably idea-starved and panicking) partner. That's your gift to them.
RP is about trust, but usually RP happens on Social Media. Whether it's Bluesky or a writing platform or in-game, these are inherently zero-trust environments.
You have to EARN your fellow RP writer's trust right from the start(er). So "gift" them with interesting, SAFE, UNOBTRUSIVE ideas.
Congrats if you made it this far into the thread cause this is the MOST USEFUL IMPROVISATIONAL WEAPON FOR RP WRITERS.
I'm using another neat tool in that example: ENDOWMENT.
Improvisation is about trust. You trust your partner to "gift" you ideas. Anything you can react and respond to.
"A to C" feels like magic:
A: I meet you at the docks.
B: I'm there because I'm looking for a certain person.
C: I recognize that certain person's signature trinket in your hands...but I don't recognize you.
Our first interaction isn't an introduction, now it's a mystery.
"A to C" is another good improvisational tool for RP writers.
Your first idea (A) is probably fine.
Your second idea (B) is directly inspired by A.
Your third idea (C) draws inspiration from both A and B.
Start at A, jump to B and C. Don't start your scene with A. Start on C.
savvy writers are probably recognizing; these are basically just writing prompts. improvisers drill these in practice and bring them ALL to the scene in a snap. RPers aren't under the same time pressure, but drawing an arrow from your narrative quiver gets faster - and easier - with practice.
ACTION: what are you doing? can it be done ALONE, or TOGETHER? can the action be shared? will sharing that action make it MORE or LESS challenging?
OBJECTIVE: what should your starter LEAD YOU TO? where does your interaction go? what should your interaction accomplish?
RELATIONSHIP: who are you to each other? who has higher status, and who has lower status? do you have something the other WANTS or NEEDS?
SETTING: where are you in this moment? what about this place brought you together? what are you doing there?

If it works, you can leave it like this forever! If it doesn't work just flip the DNS setting back to "automatic" and save to get rid of it.
DNS has to continually renew so absolute worst case scenario, this problem should solve itself in a day or so.
i'll keep yapping in a QRP but this is real af. there ARE tricks and training to make it a little easier....
i teach and perform improvised comedy where we don't get to rehearse our lines and everything you say in front of a hundred-odd people is made up on the spot
can i say something
you could be a professional with years under your belt and the first line you say will STILL be hard
as soon as @thefancyfencer.bsky.social DMed me "i need ringo for an interstella 5555 screenshot" i stopped reading and said yes because i knew he'd capture THIS EXACT IMPORTANT DETAIL
go to Network Connections, right click Wifi, click Properties
the Properties window opens. highlight Internet Protocol Version 4, click Properties
Click "Use the following DNS server addresses:" and enter PREFERRED: 8.8.8.8, ALTERNATE: 8.8.4.4
Windows right?? Try this, it's reversible if it doesn't help
start menu > start typing "network connections", eventually you can click "View Network Connections" > right click the wifi > Properties > select Internet Protocol Version 4 > Properties > check "Use the following DNS"
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
that's progress π chip isn't fried and since the bluetooth device works as usual that means the drivers are still working. so it sounds like the wifi configs. assuming you already completely removed the wifi network and tried to rejoin it?
