Becoming oddly interested in the physical infrastructure of the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
Fascinating Bloomberg piece from 2023.

This is a video of a drone landing on a moving radar truck and filming while more drones fly in and disable the truck. Holy cow.

There was a point in the Tx observer piece where I asked my wife the capex cost of an RO system per gallon and she immediately gave a number larger than the original quote for the ENTIRE desal plant in 2024 (didn't compare to the full price they inflated to).
Corpus Christi was already low on water when it invited water-guzzling fossil-fuel industries to take whatever it had left. Itβs a familiar example of exactly how not to prepare for a hotter world

One sort of undercooked thought I have is that Americansβ¦ donβt know how to walk. They donβt walk to school as kids and so they just never develop the skill, so when they try to walk places itβs unfamiliar and effortful and unpleasant in a way it wouldnβt be if they had learned how as children.

Oil Tanker Freight Rates Surged
The question was raised how bad a task would it be to clear the Strait of Hormuz if it was mined. The answer is "pretty bad".

three ships hit now www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
One thing I've been stressing is that, if Hormuz traffic remained stopped, the monumental oil supply shock will manifest as sharp price spikes in wealthy nations that sap disposable incomes
In poorer countries, the shock will manifest as outright physical shortages.

Up to 3 separate cargo ships were hit overnight according to the last few posts.

Excited to share a new @nber.org paper w/Blonz/Hossain/Mulder/Weill where we show credit scores impact homeowners insurance premiums as much as disaster risk.
Hereβs what happened in WA when they banned credit scoring:
Map snapshot depicting the predicted relative anomalousness of surface temperatures from the ECMWF ensemble over the Western U.S. in about a week from now. A a huge region of bright orange and red colors (depicting extremely high warm temperature anomalies) is centered right in the middle of the map, and covers essentially the entire region.
Lots of buzz online about an upcoming major March heatwave for the American SW & California. And in this case, it does indeed appear increasingly likely than an extremely anomalous and even record-breaking heatwave may envelop much of the SW about a week from now.

Meanwhile, Spain's massive investment in renewables is paying dividends now: with prices for Spanish industry and consumers low and stable compared with other European economies.

This story also highlights the simultaneously local nature and regional impacts of water resources issues. Need to have nuanced understanding of local water management and water rights to understand if a project is truly impactful or even feasible.
