It takes a certain kind of…narcissistic nihilism to look across the country at people self-organizing against something that is generally a fairly good material symbol of the intangible class warfare that has alienated them and say, “what a silly distraction from what *really* matters.” And yet…

Interested to learn your thoughts, informed by research and/or recent experience, for a monograph about explaining ideals of social justice teacher unionism to ed activists who never knew schools or teaching without the neoliberal reforms, testing especially. Replies and DMs work. Thanks!

"In a rapidly evolving situation, the best way to assess the specific challenges+ leverage that workers have is to go out to our departments or labs to figure out who is currently working, what their jobs are, obstacles they might face, and what next steps workers could collectively build towards."

Tennessee Wants to Let Schools Ban Immigrant Kids, Threatening to “End Public Education as We Know It”
A Tennessee bill would take the right to education away from undocumented children. The Heritage Foundation is pushing it in other states.
Tennessee wants to ban undocumented children from access to a free public education, and turn school administrators into immigration informants. The Heritage Foundation wants to take that plan national. Read my latest for @theintercept.com:

UNC-CH Will ‘Scrap’ New Recording Policy, Chancellor Says
The move comes less than three weeks after the controversial rules were enacted.
Congrats to @ncaaup.bsky.social & all who fought against this surveillance policy that would've allowed admin to hijack microphones in the classroom for secret recordings.
This move would've chilled classroom discussion & suppressed students' willingness to ask questions & take intellectual risks.

The academic freedom fight has entered the classroom
From public syllabi to surveillance, universities across the country are embracing unprecedented policies that professors say are undermining their academic freedom.

One huge problem here is that the child, or children who were deprived of education (because this is how the money was spent) have no legal recourse for those damages - quantifiable, life long damages due to deprivation of education. All in the name of "parent empowerment"

“Academic freedom —the ability to research, teach, & learn without interference is essential to the quality of education we offer in North Carolina.
Do we want UNC to go in the direction of Texas or Florida or we do we want to uphold the reputation, standards & quality that it has for decades?”

Let Students Learn!
The UNC Board of Governors just voted to rewrite the definition of academic freedom to effectively limit students' ability to fully engage in a variety of scholarly topics & limit open inquiry & academic debate in NC higher education.

RIGHT NOW: The NC AAUP is at the UNC Board of Governors meeting fighting back against attempts to squash open inquiry & academic debate in higher education.
This political interference is part of a broader effort to restrict what faculty can say & do in their classrooms.

the license criminalization scheme in Kansas...stripping immigrants of their legal status...
all of this shows, and is meant to show, that the legal rights of disfavored groups are conditional and can be rescinded at will
such discriminatory chaos is incompatible with a real inclusive democracy

I want to be clear, @aaup.org stands with our HBCUs. At the same time, what Virginia State University did by laying off 6 tenured/tenure-stream faculty, for NO CAUSE, & threatening them with trespass breaks every norm. It is shameful. Reinstate the Fired Six! SIGN & SHARE

In the concentration camp universe, this is what's known as a filtration camp. A government preemptively takes a whole class of people to interrogate and detain extrajudicially in order to inflict duress on them while arbitrarily assessing their (supposed) culpability.

Thousands of institutions abandoned programs, ended or rewrote scholarships, closed down clubs and publications, all in pre-emptive compliance.
And you know why?
Mostly because they wanted to do it if they thought they could blame someone else for it.
