(I assume the example you intended to use was ‘nid oes eisiau arnynt’ as ‘nid mae…’ doesn’t exist in either register)

I understand what you’re saying, but the example you cite ignores the fact that there are ‘intermediate’ constructions such as ‘does dim eisiau arnyn nhw’ that are perfectly natural in spoken Welsh that mean the literary form often isn’t as archaic or unfamiliar as you suggest

Sorry, what? Native Welsh speaker here, and I must have been of sick the day we learnt literary Welsh ‘as a foreign language’…. I do however remember studying texts from pre-Norman times that were easier to decipher than Shakespearean English

Difficult to know without seeing the field in question, but might it be funnel-shaped, or somehow be draining water into the river?

Me: "My apartment is too small for my grand piano. I'm going to store it on the sidewalk."

City: "Citation issued for illegal dumping"

Me: "My garage is too small for my SUV. I'm going to store it in the street."

City: "Sounds great, no worries, just move it once a month, ok?"

I think the problem is nicely encapsulated by the people replying to this drawing equivalences between the behaviour of their potentially lethal inbred wolf and that of children. Human children! Says a lot about the scale of the entitlement we’re dealing with here.

Ah yes, children are such a danger to dogs we should probably muzzle the kids as well for the poor little dogs’ safety…

Also, kids don’t attack dogs in public spaces, giving them potentially lifelong phobias (if they’re lucky)

C11 (and earlier) Welsh borrowing from Latin, while C16 Welsh borrows from English also seems logical?

I wonder if the swydd/sir difference is accounted for by time? The English ‘swyddi’ go back to Norman times, while the Welsh ‘siroedd’ didn’t come into existence for another 500 years. Maybe they weren’t considered to be the same thing at the time and so a different word was used for them?

Amwythig is the Welsh name for Shrewsbury, so Swydd Amwythig is Shrewsburyshire. Of course, some of these Welsh names (for towns, if not for counties) will be older than the English ones…
