Our immigration system is broken from top to bottom. Calls for immigration reform are not simply about increasing the number of admitted immigrants.
Reform is about ensuring people have due process; that all respect their rights; that spaces are not terrorizing and confusing.
We need justice.
To anyone who says, "They should just do it the right way": this is the space that many "do it the right way folks" are experiencing.
Federal officials designed court structures to make immigrants fail, to leave them in terror.
This setup is not only unjust--it is anti-justice.
When I checked with a lawyer friend who regularly works in the first court, she said that it's constantly changing. Entrances, protocols, and patterns shift weekly.
It's not meant to be fair, just, or orderly.
It's meant to foster terror and confusion.
It creates a dehumanizing environment.
Whereas the first courthouse was primarily focused on immigration (if not solely), the second had a variety of other courts like tax, claims, etc.
The feeling was dramatically different. Security was friendly. There were no lurking agents.
Students observed juvenile court and were heartbroken.
Finally, some of the other observers from a volunteer organization suggested where we might try. After trying at least a dozen courtrooms, an observer suggested that we try the courthouse next door.
We took up this suggestion and had a RADICALLY different experience.
After finding the courtrooms, none of the private contractors allowed us to observe. They all stated that each courtroom had an observer and no more were welcome.
We tried to ask around if there were other judges who were allowing observers, and security staff refused to provide answers.
Whereas contractors were in uniform, ICE and other federal officials were in street clothes, neck gaiters, and VERY heavily armed. They lurked around corners, staring and resting hands on holsters.
They made it clear that they were in control and comfortable using violence.
I tried to ask government employees where to go to observe court, explaining we were a student group.
They were aggressive, giving only one-word answers, all of which were unhelpful.
To be clear, I had a letter from a lead immigration judge saying we were welcome to come observe.
I was the last to go through security, making sure my students got through ahead. After walking through, my group had simply followed what seemed the logical spot. It was the deportation line.
Unless you know precisely where to go, you end up accidentally in deportation.
That seems intentional.
It could not have been more different, more terrifying, & more heartbreaking.
Upon arrival, the courthouse was completely surrounded with barricades & *private contractors* (not gov. employees) checked IDs. After entering, private contractors hollered at people going through security screening.
🧵 On immigration court:
In 2017, I observed immigration court and deportation proceedings in Phoenix. The events and results were sad; and the physical space was sterile. Despite this, staff was helpful and judges welcomed observers.
Yesterday I brought 9 college students to observe court in NYC.
Drone strikes in Haiti.
Drone strikes. In Haiti.
By private contractors.
They’re killing Haitians for private profit & the world barely pays attention.
The story of Haiti is the story America likes to tell about itself. Except there, it’s true. And the west has never stopped punishing Haiti for it
Congratulations! What awesome news!!
Not gonna lie, this sounds like a ska song.
Worth noting that "AI reduces labor demand" and "AI increases labor demand" can both be pitched with negative valence.
The modern American right is a post-constitutional movement. Here, a supposed rightwing national security expert claims that Congress does not have the power to declare war - despite the plain text of the U.S. Constitution.
When we take action as a union, we win ✊
Tarrio is, quite literally, a pardoned terrorist.
They had names. They had beautiful faces. And they had the same dreams as your kids - crushed when American "precision" bombs slammed into their Minab elementary school, killing 175
Don't blame AI for this. Blame the sick humans who see war as a game

"All the. Small gulls. Are smart. Looking.
I'll take. One flap.
They glide. Best trip.
Say it ain't so, I will not go.
Turn the lights off, love all these gulls!"
Sounds treasonous
Damn.
CBS obtained video of the DHS killing of an unarmed man in Texas that DHS concealed for nearly a year, which clearly contradicts claims that he violently rammed anyone. He is shot with his brake lights on, car not moving or barely moving. Another DHS crime.

I believe this means Doc Rivers has joined more public statements calling for the defense of higher education against the Trump Administration than has the President of the University of Chicago.
The world is hostage to a madman.
I still have yet to encounter anyone explaining a real pedagogical use for AI in the classroom beyond "Well they might have to use it at work."
I would be upset if billionaires and corporations walked into a school and dictated my curriculum or pedagogy, but it's fine when "it's for a job"?
