Over-the-counter medicines like painkillers, nasal sprays, and cough syrups are meant for mild, short-term conditions. Used incorrectly or for too long, they can cause side effects – and in some cases even lead to dependence.

As part of the initiative, a series of posters have being displayed in the Department of Microbiology at the Medical College of the University of Rzeszów and have being used to raise the awareness on drug resistance to adult educators as well as students of various fields.

The campaign is being carried out in cooperation with the State Sanitary Inspection in Poland and was initiated under the National Health Programme as part of the European Antibiotic Awareness Day.

The University of Rzeszów, by joining the idea of the MedLit project, is conducting an educational campaign on antibiotic resistance titled “Use Antibiotics Wisely”.

If antibiotic therapy is necessary, it must be administered as directed. It is also important to take care of your diet and microbiome during therapy.” says Assoc. Prof. Anna Żaczek, The Head of Department of Microbiology at the Medical College of the University of Rzeszów.

"Even a short course of antibiotic therapy, lasting only a few days, can reorganize the intestinal microbiota and cause gastrointestinal disorders. Frequent treatments perpetuate this dysbiosis, increasing the risk of intestinal diseases. The use of antibiotics must always be justified.
