So: In 2017, Congress made this happen:
NIH: Proposed 22% cut --> 9% increase
NSF: Proposed 11% cut --> 4% increase
NOAA: Proposed 16% cut --> 4% increase
Obviously, 2025 is not 2017. A lot is diff now. But still:
💰 Congress, not WH, sets budgets.
📞 Public support & calls to Congress matter.

Exclusive: NIH to suspend funds for research abroad as it overhauls policy
Move by US biomedical agency threatens thousands of projects on infectious diseases, cancer and more.
NEW: An NIH policy coming in the next week will target — and at least temporarily stop — funding outside the US, threatening thousands of projects and collaborations on topics like infectious diseases and cancer.
Some NIH staff have already been told to hold all subaward funds for foreign labs.

This week’s main story is about the budget and staffing cuts being made to public health agencies in the U.S. under RFK Jr.’s leadership, how those cuts will impact all of us, and some foolproof ideas for what scientists can do in the absence of totally superfluous stuff like, y’know, centrifuges.

This is utterly dystopian: Leaders who have dedicated their careers to making our country healthy are being forced to resign or--get this--be reassigned to work on reservations for the Indian Health Service. This is beyond insulting, it is sick: using Native Americans as punishment

48 Scientific Societies Representing Almost 100,000 Scientists Ask Congress to Protect the Future of Science
48 scientific societies representing almost 100,000 scientists signed on to a letter asking Congress to protect the future of science
Today, a broad coalition of scientific professional societies who represent over 92,000 scientists are speaking out against the politicization and demonization of Federally funded science and government scientist jobs.
It was an honor to help the Union of Concerned Scientists with this! 🧪🌎

What The NIH Cut To Indirect Cost Payments Could Cost Red States
The Trump administration’s decision to cap how much NIH will pay for indirect costs on university research grants would cost 10 red states more than $1 billion.
Alzheimer’s disease is non-partisan. Cancer is non-partisan. Diabetes is non-partisan. This is a short-sighted policy that could cost thousands of jobs and set biomedical research progress back by years. Contact your local representatives and urge them to stand against this dangerous policy.

Deep Cuts to Medical Research Funds Could Hobble University Budgets
Grants from the National Institutes of Health come with additional money for overhead. Proposed funding cuts would leave colleges with large budget gaps.
Now under Trump, the NIH says it is cutting ~$9 billion in federal research grants supporting medical research ranging from cancer to Alzheimer's diseases.

There are so many awful asinine things going on in the country right now but I feel that it is my mission as a scientist to communicate what is happening to health research. Frankly we are in CRISIS mode--this blog post lays it all out. #episky #sciencesky www.science.org/content/blog...
