Honored to have the support of my colleague, Congresswoman @sydneykamlager.bsky.social. We know that when working families thrive, all of California thrives. Together, we’ll fight for communities of color, union workers and all Californians.

was a Spanish governor - a Spaniard, not a Latino, commanding a multinational force of Spanish regulars, Creoles, free Black men, Native Americans, Irish soldiers of the Hibernia Regiment, and Acadians - who drove the British from the Gulf Coast and denied them dominance over the waters that would become essential to American commerce, security, and expansion.
The Gulf of Mexico was not secured for American posterity by Americans. It was secured by Spain. The battle commands that defended the colonists were delivered in Spanish.
To rename that body of water now, while simultaneously allowing the story of the man who protected it to languish in a hotel construction site for five years, is not a neutral act. It is a statement about whose history counts. It is erasure with a cartographer's pen, or a Trump sharpie, following erasure with a storage crate.

wasn't until December 2014 that a portrait of Gálvez was finally installed in the U.S. Capitol.
That same year, Congress granted him honorary U.S. citizenship. Only eight people have ever received that distinction. Churchill.
Lafayette. Pulaski. Mother Teresa. Raoul Wallenberg. William Penn and Hannah Callowhill Penn. And Gálvez.
Only eight people in our entire history are on this list. You get on it by being essential to the American project.
Two hundred thirty-one years late. But the promise was kept.

Informative piece by @mikemadrid.bsky.social on “the Spaniard who saved America,” Bernardo de Gálvez. Gálvez led the Spanish forces that defeated British to keep the Louisiana Territory - including the Mississippi River - which ultimately became part of the U.S.

Also noteworthy, by the way, that Hispanic Catholics are a very Democratic group. Far more Democratic in their identifications than either white Catholics or Hispanic Protestants. They are very committed to social justice.

Hate to break it to you but Latinos are racially white.

As for your other racist tropes…can’t say I’m surprised but it’s getting really boring listening to this nonsense. Must be because you’re Texan.

Is questioning electability racism? Texas’ tense Dem primary comes to a head. Jasmine Crockett and James Talarico have been locked in a fierce Senate primary loaded with racial overtones and questions about electability.

“If Latino voters do break towards Crockett, then there is some evidence there’s a solidarity between voters of color, and that has been the orthodoxy of the Democratic Party for the past three decades,” says @mikemadrid.bsky.social.

“If Talarico wins, and if he wins by a good measurable margin, then I think that we will probably be able to finally put that to bed,” says @mikemadrid.bsky.social.

The Racial Desegregation Case You've Likely Never Heard Of February 18th marks the anniversary of the Mendez vs Westminster case that changed the country and race relations forever.

This is a can’t miss piece by @mikemadrid.bsky.social on a key case in U.S. history towards outlawing racial segregation. And one I, sadly, don’t think I’d ever heard of before.
Mendez vs Westminster, decided 80 years ago today.
