we criticise fiction all the time for killing women just for the sake of a man’s character growth. Why is this any different? Julai already proves the point you speak of. In this version, his death would serve no additional purpose.
Plus, there’s no real learning or growth if wolfwood dies not realising he doesn’t have to do everything alone, which has been his core theme through the entirely of this version of Trigun especially. I didn’t see it coming, but I’m also glad it took a different turn. There’s something in it.
I would say - take a look at the fact that the other gung ho guns are still alive and redeemed. Wolfwood surviving fits into that. I think in this version of the story, love and peace might actually save people.
