conservative evangelicalism is the direct theological offspring of slaveholder christianity and it contains all of its pathologies, part infinity

The most early-60s thing I can imagine is a black and white sitcom featuring a beatnik and a talking horse that banter back and forth for the whole episode.
More than a few folks (rightfully) pointing out that this is down to everyone in the room now being incredibly stupid, but folks... I just don't understand how so many people could be so fucking stupid, at the same time, about this very specific thing.
This is one of those things that seems like it should be intuitive to most people, in the same way “lying in general is bad, but lying to government agents that are trying to take your neighbor away is good” is (or should be).

I don't really agree with this but it is funny and in the end isn't that what matters
For anyone who’s lost count, “17 years old” means made in 2009.
Not whatever year in the 20th century you probably imagined.
The 7yo watched a video about the history of Apple and got real curious about the iPod. So I dug it out of storage and let him test it out and now he’s bringing it with us in a trip, “in case we want to listen to music”. It’s 17 years old and all the music on it has been on there at least 10 years.
If I had a nickel for every time Franz Ferdinand was involved in the precursor events of a world war, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird it happened twice
They really weren't paying much attention to everything he did, said and promised over the years.
I always thought its problem was that it was an expensive show to make, compared to a normal sitcom, or even an animated one. (Although I don’t imagine some people not watching it because they thought “oh it’s got talking dinosaurs so it must be only for kids” helped)
I think this may be a hard-wired thing in some people’s brains. I say this because I think I have it. I need to be regularly reminded that I have a body and that this body matters. Otherwise I’d fall into feeling like a brain in a jar. I suspect some people don’t get those reminders often enough.
They think that the fact that war crimes got prosecuted instead of encouraged is what went wrong. That Abu Ghraib (you know, the thing that radicalized a significant portion of the local populace against us) was the ideal not a stupid, stupid mistake.
It's hard to internalize the fact that the administration really does believe the Iraq war was "woke" and that they would be able to easily defeat a substantially more powerful nation simply by being based chads
"Iran war drags on" my siblings in christ it is day seven

TIL the only reason people think all radioactive stuff glows green - like the fuel rods on the Simpsons - is because of glowing watch and clock dials painted with radium.
In other words the green-glowing ooze from TMNT is a legacy of the Radium Girls.
It is not, however, why the Hulk is green.
Yeah, but I think it's valid! Men are right to feel insulted by ads that show dads as incompetent buffoons whose wives have to show them basic tasks, so I think marketing laundry with a competent male character who cares about his laundry because he has lots of hobbies and is good at them is cool!
Birds you can change
1) canaries, parrots, etc (teach to talk)
2) chickens, turkeys etc (turning into food)
3) pigeons (breeding to look silly)
Birds you cannot change
1) Basically every other bird
2) Ronnie Van Zant?
Apparently the viewing order on Disney+ is different from the original airing order. Weird.
Theory that I’d be happy to be proven wrong about: energy that made surprisingly sophisticated “kids” cartoons - like Gravity Falls and Steven Universe - now goes into sneaking surprisingly sophisticated stuff into preschool shows like Bluey. We only have the latter now BECAUSE we lost the former.
My 7yo wanted to watch “the Muppet Show” in order. The very first skit of the first episode is “Mahna Mahna”. My mind is blown.
what bothers me about the "kitchen table" vs "identity politics" framing, as here with saying dems are out of touch with the middle class, is that (putting aside whether or not dems overly focus on identity politics), identity politics are kitchen table issues for the people in those identities
The reason to not run stop signs and traffic lights is supposed to be naked self interest. Because someone could hit you and you could die. People don’t even have that anymore.
Something that speaks to a sudden decline in our society is the amount of people I’ve seen lately approaching stop signs and then going right through them like “nope, don’t believe in this anymore!”
they're trying to do middle east oil imperialism, so bush but more based and cool, but are too dumb to understand that one of the rules of doing that is to never say that's what you're doing
My brother, we had to explain a 1/3 pound burger was bigger than a quarter pound burger and still failed
So much online conservatism these days is just "I miss being a kid"
Even if they weren’t such a large share of the population, evangelicals would have something important to offer. America was historically a Protestant country, and much of its culture and institutional structure has Protestant roots. Also, as a traditionally middle-class movement, evangelicalism has thrived by being in touch with the culture and concerns of middle- and working-class America. Given these facts, evangelicals are well-positioned to understand what resonates with the broad middle in America. By bringing this knowledge to c-suites and lecture halls, they can help bridge the divide that separates the elite from the rest of the country. Indeed, one reason evangelical politicians have done so well at winning elections is their ability to respond to the concerns of non-college-educated Americans.
Evangelicals have plenty to offer: they’re white, first of all. And secondly, they’re not ‘elite’. Thirdly, they know how to appeal to uneducated idiots.
I’m sold, sign me up!
Genuinely, it’s because the tradcaths have Warhammer shit like Cathedrals and Latin while Evangelicals take communion with grape soda in abandoned Walmarts so there’s a certain asymmetry in status, to put it mildly.
