Even when the UK had a national selection show, it was never taken seriously at all. Some years, it was even a segment on other TV shows. I think that's the main reason Eurovision has a bad reputation in the UK, though it's better since Sam Ryder's 2nd place
It was probably in the contract that these specific songwriters had to be used, as silly as it is, they were probably hired by the broadcaster. Wonder how much he's made in YouTube ad revenue/ music streaming on various platforms on his older stuff between his announcement and today.

Oh absolutely. It was pretty clear which ones had effectively bought their way in, because they spent the next 5 years being absolutely furious at their own inadequacy. And these are the people who will go on to run the country.
