Apart from glacier funerals and glacier autopsies, scientists from Rice University maintain a global database of glaciers that have disappeared along with their stories. glaciercasualtylist.rice.edu
Ecological grief has three central causes: tangible ecological loss, such as the destruction of land or the loss of a certain species; the disruption of identity, especially if that identity is tied to a specific environment; and the fear of future loss.
On similar lines, Craig & Kuh (2024) write about "eco-necrotourism" to describe going to a place to grieve the fact that the ecosystem was being lost.
Grief has different dimensions and "ecological grief" is the grief felt in relation to experiences or anticipated ecological losses, including the loss of species, ecosystems and meaningful landscapes due to acute or chronic environmental change.
