The reality of Katy Perry and Gayle King's Blue Origin space flight
Iβm all for womenβs progress and liberation. But calling this a win for women feels outright delusional.
This is a good example of tourism and marketplace feminism and the timing couldn't have been more bad! As rightly said by the author .."Space tourism is not feminism. It is consumer capitalism, at its most inaccessible". #Spacetourism #ethics www.msnbc.com/msnbc/amp/rc...

Colombia wants to ban Pablo Escobar and other narco-themed merchandise β hereβs why
Colombiaβs history as a drug trafficking hub still plays a major role in attracting visitors to the country.
π On "Narco tourism - fascination with true crime, drugs and cartels is popular - tourists should take a moment to consider how they might feel if someone who had murdered their loved ones became a souvenir fridge magnet to remember their country by."

In our latest book on Critical theories in dark tourism, one of the chapters explores the conceptual intersections between dark tourism and traumascapes raised by the shrinking cryosphere with discussions on ecological grief. If you haven't checked it out yet, then you must! #darktourism

Ecological grief has three central causes: tangible ecological loss, such as the destruction of land or the loss of a certain species; the disruption of identity, especially if that identity is tied to a specific environment; and the fear of future loss.

On similar lines, Craig & Kuh (2024) write about "eco-necrotourism" to describe going to a place to grieve the fact that the ecosystem was being lost.

People Are Grieving Ecosystem Loss. How Can Public Land Managers Plan Accordingly? - Eos
From hordes rushing into national parks to mourners holding glacier funerals, tourists wanting to take in threatened natural places may be shifting visitation patterns.
Grief has different dimensions and "ecological grief" is the grief felt in relation to experiences or anticipated ecological losses, including the loss of species, ecosystems and meaningful landscapes due to acute or chronic environmental change.

Global tourism is back to pre-COVID highs
Global tourism generated nearly $1.6 trillion (about Β₯250 trillion) in 2024, about 3% more than the previous year and 4%Β more than in 2019.
"Global tourism fully recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic in 2024 with 1.4 billion international tourist arrivals recorded worldwide due to "robust" demand from key markets.
A majority of destinations welcomed more international tourists in 2024 than they did before the pandemic..."
