A male Red-Shafted Northern Flicker launches towards a higher vantage point to sing about his territory and how desirable a mate he is. Shot in the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge just outside Portland, Oregon. Vertical color photo: A large branch comes up diagonally from the lower right of the image:. It's obviously dead: the bark is gone, and near the bottom of the frame it's covered in moss and mushrooms. It end to the left of the vertical mid point of the image. From there, a male red-shafted northern flick is launching into the air. His wings are spread wide, exposing the red flight feathers. His tail his red, tipped in black, his breast white with blacks spots, with a black triangle just under his neck. His head is gray, with a brown crown and a brilliant red cheek patch, and another red patch at the back of the crown. He's looking up at the at next place he's targeted for food and performance. The background is evergreen tree branches.

All the different maple trees that grow around temples and shrines create the most incredible fall foliage I’ve ever seen, with endless shades of colour. Some of the trees almost seem to glow.

A serene Japanese temple garden in late autumn, filled with trees glowing in shades of red, orange, yellow, and green. Soft sunlight filters through the dense canopy, casting gentle light onto a moss-covered ground. A traditional building with a tiled roof is partially visible through the foliage, and small stone markers rest quietly near the hedge. The clear blue sky peeks through the leaves. The whole scene is calm and warm.

Standing beneath the autumn canopy in a Japanese temple garden on a clear November day feels like stepping into a warm, glowing light — almost otherworldly.

I actually think I prefer the winter photo.
The colours feel so gentle, and the shade of the water is beautiful. The powder‑sugar snow has a lovely softness to it, and the icicles in the upper right corner add something unexpected.

Such a great contrast between the two. They really show how the same place can express two completely different characters, each one feeling just as natural and just as beautiful.
