Birders encouraged to detect Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers with passive recorders During the last two years, The Woodpecker Network has successfully used passive acoustic monitors to detect the calling and drumming of Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers. The group has now written guidance protocol for Song Meters to provide more of the practical details for using the method with the devices.

The Woodpecker Network is encouraging birders to detect Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers by using passive acoustic sound recorders:

Do you have lots of blackthorn and sloes locally, mixed with hawthorn? If so, check for split stones, a sign that Hawfinches are present, as here at Ardingly. Watch from just before sunrise to actually see the birds. @sussexwildlife.bsky.social @sussexornitholo.bsky.social @kneppwilding.bsky.social

Can you help your Society by taking on a volunteer role?

We urgently need an Editor for the Sussex Bird Report.
We often need species account writers too, so that is another opportunity to help out.

Do please get in touch now if you’d like to find out more.

This is a brilliant initiative. Woodpecker Network is working with BTO to develop a passive acoustic monitoring module for Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers. Trials have proved successful in reliably detecting their drums and calls, revealing many new locations.

Birders record Jerdon's Courser 16 years after last sighting The Critically Endangered Jerdon's Courser has been rediscovered in Andhra Pradesh, India, outside its known range for the first time in 125 years. Thought to survive only in a tiny patch of the Lankamalla hills, the elusive bird was detected through acoustic recordings by a team of birders in August 2025. The find provides fresh hope for the species, ranked among the world’s top ten 'lost birds', and highlights the urgent need to safeguard India's remaining scrubland habitats.

The mysterious Jerdon's Courser has been rediscovered outside its known range for the first time in more than a century:

Ragwort is a valuable haven for wildlife, when allowed to grow in the right places, & a crucial foodplant for the Cinnabar Moth caterpillar - whose numbers have been in decline. We leave Ragwort to grow on our reserves whenever possible. Read more here
