The past week has been the worst and best of my life: all of my NIH grants were terminated, including active suicide prevention and eating disorder treatment clinical trials with lgbtq individuals. My first child was also bornβtrying to focus on the joy in a sea of utter devastation and cruelty
I think youβre spot onβand the cost of an institutionβs indirect rate being restored will be a full commitment to the various executive orders (e.g., ending all DEI initiatives and research within that organization).Will institutions throw these programs and researchers under the bus for federal $?
Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings.
But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.
Are there lessons from past bans on stem cell research at NIH that can be helpful for the current context?
