Lanterns trailer may have set a new land speed record for going from ‘this could be good’ to ‘I hope everyone involved has wet socks for the rest of their lives’.
People are allowed to dislike the fact that he decimated an important aspect of the character in order to not have to make a statement on weaponized xenophobia and how anti-immigrant hate campaigns are inflamed by misinformation, often propagated by rich white men, such as Lex Luthor.
In the current political climate especially, Gunn choosing to intentionally downplay the immigrant angle of Superman and play into harmful stereotypes with the "Superharem" (I felt gross typing that) is something I believe to be fully worthy of criticism.
In doing this, Gunn took from a story in which Superman is the victim of a xenophobic smear campaign and turned the ending from him reaffirming his heritage to him completely disavowing his immigrant status, all to fit in line with his preference for heroes with daddy issues.
Spoiler alert for a great Superman comic, but Superman: Birthright tackles a similar idea of Superman struggling with his heritage, after learning that Kryptonian society may have been horrifically evil. However, the comic had this be a clever fake by Luthor, while the movie played it 100% straight
Krypton being an explicitly evil colonial society is a very recent trend. It is not core to the character, and is allowed to be critiqued as an adaptational choice. People are allowed to call out Gunn for taking the most prominent immigrant superhero and forcing him to completely renounce his people
As someone who hates the Snyderverse for various reasons, including Snyder's fundamental misunderstanding of Superman, this take isn't it. Gunn blatantly reframed Superman's immigrant background to give him daddy issues (a common theme in his comic book works) and make Krypton irredeemably evil 🧵

recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best. It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.
