I think the time & focus spent on academic achievements takes away from learning life lessons, including non-academic social interactions. I had a division chief who was world-famous in our field, but I don’t think n he ever watched television except for the news, and never went to movies or plays.

I didn't realize you are taking care of your mother at home. Now I understand better why you wanted to travel for your vacation. Everyone needs a respite when taking care of elders. I took care of my childless aunt and uncle for 10 years. It was grueling work.
