My understanding from the outside, strictly as a fan, was that Jim respected Don so much that he wanted his help at Valiant at a time when veteran artists were finding it very difficult to get work due to the trend of “hot” 20-something (Image style) artists taking over.
Respect to Don and Jim.

God, yes. Exactly the age I was at the time. To me, that was the golden age of comics.

On a personal note, I bought my first Marvel comics at about the time Jim Shooter was beginning his tenure as Marvel’s E-I-C. Every month for the next 9 years, I read several books he either wrote, edited, or had a role in creating or approving. He was a giant to me, in more ways than one.

In addition to his historic tenure as Marvel’s editor-in-chief, Jim also made history in the mid-1960s as the youngest professional writer in comics history at the age of 14. He had an outsize impact on the LSH, for whom he wrote many unforgettable stories, introducing a number of key characters.

Jim Shooter (1951-2025). Perhaps more than any other person, Jim shaped the course of Marvel Comics’ many successes from 1978 to 1987. Those comics helped shape the comics industry, and later, the movie industry, and they helped to shape me. Farewell, Jim.

A two-page spread of the DC Promotional Comics brochure from 1979, featuring Superman in the DC Comics office showing off some sample comic books to the reader while Wonder Woman is casually sitting at a desk beside him, pausing from her task of editing copy on a clipboard with a pencil to smile at the reader. In the background, other writers and artists are working on content, and Batman is reviewing the work of one artist at a drafting table, pointing at a particular aspect of the artwork. This is a scan from my Dad's copy of the brochure, which is signed by penciler Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez (praised be his name). The artwork was inked by Dick Giordano.
In fact, Mr. Garcia-Lopez (praised be his name) signed my dad's copy...

A photo of Kamen
Covers by Kamen for Shock SuspenStories #13 & 15, Psychoanalysis #1, and the Creepshow adaptation.
Today is the birthday of artist Jack Kamen (May 29, 1920-Aug. 5, 2008). Most known for his work at EC Comics & for providing the comic artwork used in George Romero & Stephen King’s 1982 film, Creepshow (as well as the cover for the comic book adaptation).

Don’t recall if Roy was directed to sideline the JSA. Young All-Stars replaced All-Star Squadron soon after, adding to my discontent.

I loved the art, but hated this story for many reasons. To me, the only upside to how Crisis ended was the opportunity to use the Golden Age characters in the rebooted mainstream (“New Earth”) DC series, & this totally dashed that hope.

Marie Severin's black and white wash caricature of the EC Comics publisher with his feet up on his desk and his head back in his chair while napping. There's a blank thought balloon over his head toward which an arrow points with the caption, "Oh, wouldn't we like to know!" I had Gaines autograph in that blank thought balloon. He chose to write: "The seducers are innocent. And so is the National Lampoon!!! Bill Gaines."
Remembering MAD magazine publisher Bill Gaines, born on this date in 1922, with whom I often kibitzed during the 1972 EC Fan-Addict convention about the National Lampoon ... which resulted in this autograph atop Marie Severin's caricature in the program book as the weekend drew to a close.

Do they think he’s authoritarian because he and Green Arrow tangled over ideology in the JLA back in the late 70s? I honestly can’t remember because it’s been about 35-40 years since I last read those stories.

Going through old files, I ran across this idea I pitched to Marv Wolfman when we first relaunched Adventures of Superman. Sadly it went nowhere at that time:(
