Re: the German election:
In the end it will be a coalition government, viz. the CDU + 2 other parties... so although the base party is conservative, the coalition will be more moderate... at least we hope so...

CDU (Merz) - the Republican Party up until Bush II
SPD - Democratic Party of the 1960s
Greens - pro-infrastructure & environment, guaranteed min wage & retirement
Left - socialists, anti-war, open asylum, min-income
