This is the main gallery raised up creating a large space beneath allowing fresh air to flow through the space naturally to help counter Accra’s hot, tropical climate. Jürgen frequently works between Vienna and Accra, together with Bärbel, they deliver projects with a strong connection to the community and its surroundings.
The Nubuke Foundation is an important art and culture centre in Accra, Ghana. Its brutalist gallery, by Bärbel Müller and Jürgen Strohmayer is to champion Ghanaian arts, heritage and culture.

The model is a large and substantial one in full colour. At the front is the sea with the beach behind it and then the Pavilion. There was to have been a circular swimming pool at the front as well as a huge statue of Persephone and a pergola. In addition a double height pier out over the sea with diving boards was included.
We have the original architect’s model of the De La Warr Pavilion, on display in our Sargent Gallery. Sadly a number of the proposed features didn’t make it into the final build for reasons of cost.
