1844 sketch of rioters rampaging through central Munich (likely the Isar Gate on Talstrasse) during a dispute over the price of beer in Bavaria, and the government responsible for it. The sketch is framed by two large cypress trees on each side, and the torso of an agitated goat (referring to Bock beer, a leading Bavarian style at the time). The title of the sketch is (translated from German) "The Revolutionary Goat." There is more text on the sketch, which I will translate in subsequent posts in this thread.
Had a great time on Beer Sessions Radio, talking about 1800s Bavarian beer riots, their relationship to the moral economy, and their immigration to the US!
Here's a cool commemorative sketch for Munich's 1844 riot!
