Congrats James!!
Very weird and cool to say I've been nominated for two Lizzies (IT Journalism Awards) for Best Game Reviewer and Best New Journalist this year.
Kind of wild to just be on the same list as writers who I've previously admired from afar.
That New Games Plus tier on the Kickstarter was an instant pledge on my part just for the A2 print alone (obviously also very excited for the magazine hence the article).

My Arms are Jack(ed) Now
Reviewed Esoteric Ebb, the new Disco-like that I have real affection for, even while struggling with how close it hews to its inspirations. Also has a beautifully introspective TTRPG narrative that I'm still thinking about days later.

I've been at DiGRA Australia at the University of the Sunshine Coast this week and it's been really wonderful. Just such a friendly research community and absolutely killer world-leading research projects.
Did we miss a game? Leave a comment! We're eager to continue adding to the list where we can.

Reviewed the new 28 Years, didn't like it as much as its predecessor but still a very good and interesting film with one scene in particular that will live rent free in my head for the rest of the year (complimentary).
Extremely happy with this new co-authored paper where Finn and I explore the 'interface game' as an emerging microgenre - gives us the opportunity to discuss some fascinating games and talk about the prominence of user interfaces in our daily lives.
We are once again putting together the ultimate list of upcoming Australian-developed video games.

I'm helping put together the list this year so feel free to reach out with questions or circulate the form around!
DiGRAA is always a delight and a really accommodating conference - for anyone interested even just zooming in to see the breadth of cool games research happening in Aus is worth it.
Saw Sentimental Value, absolutely loved it. Will almost certainly end up being my favourite film of the year amidst some stiff competition. Well worth seeing when it comes out on Christmas (though maybe don't take your family if things are, well, complex).
This article's a long time coming given its based on RA work I conducted for Angela in 2021. Since then, how the videogame industry draws from (typically the worst of) the tech industry has only become more prescient (boo generative AI).
If that sounds interesting, feel free to give it a read!
In it, I explore the company Brilliant Digital Entertainment and how their promotion of their interactive movies, what they called 'multipath movies', drew on logics from the dot-com bubble occurring at the same time and framed the form as a 'new economic space' to conquer.
New article up! Its called 'A Minor History of Interactive Movies: Brilliant Digital Entertainment and the Dot-Com Bubble' and is part of Convergence's new special issue on 1990s Hollywood and Games edited by Helen Stuckey and Angela Ndalianis (open access): journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
