Global Englishes Seminar with Professor Adrian Holliday Date & TimeJan 16, 2025 10:00 in DescriptionPutting aside native-speakerist labelling to find linguistic and cultural hybridity and the βtranslingual instinct I will begin with why it is necessary to put aside all forms of native-non-native-speaker labelling because of its sustained colonising and essentialist effect. I will then explain how this difficult, third-space, deCentred liberation enables new understandings of the original hybrid nature of language and culture. The resulting possibility of a βtranslingual instinctβ, situated within a seamless varicultural flow then becomes a quality which helps us to connect and work with the agency, experiences and knowledge that our students bring to the classroom. This does however bring challenges to what teachers and students need to know about the politics and sociology of language and culture.
Tomorrow! Free, online seminar with Professor Adrian Holliday π£π¬
