On the 5th of September 1942 during World War II, Petty Officer Charles Jackson French swam for 6-8 hours near Guadalcanal Island towing a raft with 15 wounded sailors after the USS Gregory sank.

He tied a rope around his waist pulled them through waters known to be filled with sharks.
