that protected millions of workers from being fired when they needed time to care for a new baby, a seriously ill relative, or their own health. But because the law only guaranteed unpaid leave, DeLauro knew it still fell short of what most families needed; unpaid leave was not enough.5/6
That experience made her acutely aware that most workers did not have the same security or financial cushion; if they got sick, unpaid time off could mean missed rent, unpaid bills, or job loss. When President Bill Clinton finally signed the FMLA into law in 1993, it was a landmark victory⦠4/6
In 1986, DeLauro had been diagnosed with early-stage ovarian cancer while working for Senator Dodd. He told her to take all the time she needed to get well, and because she was in a secure, well-paid position, she was able to focus on treatment without losing her job or paycheck. 3/6
