It made sense to butter first in colder houses with firmer butter - but how she cut it so thinly horizontally was always a source of amazement. Of course, it helped make the loaf go further, & she came from a big and not well off family.
It did look really dangerous even when I was very young π
My great-great aunt (whose cooking skills were not great apart from making amazing treacle tarts) was a dab hand at cutting the thinnest slices of Hovis by buttering the cut end of the loaf and then cutting the loaf, buttered side up & sawing towards herself.
